Night Court’s Finale Teased the Ultimate Big Bang Theory Comeback—Then NBC Pulled the Plug

It hasn’t even been a month yet, but honestly we’re still reeling from the fact that NBC canceled comedy series Night Court starring Melissa Rauch after three seasons. It’s true the show had lower viewership than previous seasons. But still! The network had been on a cancellation binge, trying to cut money wherever it could. And unfortunately, this one was one of them.

The cancellation is a true disappointment because Night Court season 3 ended on a major cliffhanger. It also cut short something us The Big Bang Theory fans will have been really looking forward to. NBC canceling Night Court robs us of the ultimate Big Bang Theory reunion.

As a refresher, Rauch starred on the sitcom as Bernadette Rostenkowski. Her TV husband on TBBT was Simon Helberg as Howard Wolowitz. Well, the Night Court season 3 finale introduces Spencer, who turns out to be Abby’s husband! What!? Poor Jake was getting ready to propose, though apparently she’s already taken. I mean, she wasn’t happy to see Spencer, but still. Abby had a lot of explanations to do. Plus, it reunites Rauch and Helberg as onscreen husband and wife once again.

Simon Helberg was going to stick around Night Court in potential season 4
Although since NBC has canceled the series, that means where the story was going to go will forever remain a mystery which is truly disappointing. Plus, the plan was that if the sitcom got a fourth season, Helberg was going to stick around as Spencer for a while. The actress told The Wrap the following about what season 4 would have looked like:

“This wouldn’t just be a one-off assignment. He would come back in and we can really do an arc for the storyline, and not only reveal what the story is behind what we saw in the finale, but sort of move forward. It would be so thrilling to get to work with Simon more.”

Real Reason Why 'Night Court' on NBC Was Canceled After Season 3

It truly would have been great to see the two actors working together again for longer than just a guest spot in one episode. The plan was for Helberg to do multiple things and stick around for a while. I mean, this was a huge plot twist no one saw coming! Abby had a husband the whole time!? Do they live together, are they separated, why did she keep him a secret, why did he walk into her place of work now? So many questions!

As a longtime fan of The Big Bang Theory, I really would have enjoyed seeing Rauch and Helberg work together onscreen again. And not just that, but as husband and wife. The two have such great chemistry together and it will definitely have been interesting to see that dynamic.

Although the show is still being shopped around, it sounds like there isn’t a good chance that another network or streamer will swoop in and save it at this time. And so, all the possibilities and questions shall remain unanswered which is a huge disappointment. I’m hoping at least after a while, the showrunners will reveal what they had planned because right now the comedy series just ends on a major question mark.

Helberg isn’t the only Big Bang co-star to appear on Rauch’s show. Earlier in the season, there was a very special reunion with Mayim Bialik in Night Court season 3 episode 5, “Mayim Worst Enemy.” She played Amy on TBBT. Then, Lauren Lapkis who played Stuart’s girlfriend Denise appeared in season 3 episode 7, “Rebound and Down.” Kunal Nayyar also appears in season 2 episode 7, “A Crime of Fashion.” He played Raj on the long-running CBS series.
