The world of 9-1-1 is fundamentally changed going forward. The ABC drama lost one of its own, the first major death of the series. The 118 lost its captain, Bobby Nash (Peter Krause), in Season 8 Episode 15.
The series will be back for Season 9, having been renewed the same day as Episode 13, on April 3, 2025. But there will be some changes when it returns this fall, both on the show itself and the schedule. Below, we’ve gathered everything we know about 9-1-1 Season 9, from its cast to when it could premiere and much more.
Who will be in the 9-1-1 Season 9 cast?
Sadly, we now know that Peter Krause will not be back, following Bobby’s death. (He did, however, appear again in Season 8, as showrunner Tim Minear told TV Insider he would.) The end of Season 8 established that no one else is leaving the 118, so Angela Bassett (as Athena), Oliver Stark (as Buck), Aisha Hinds (as Hen), Kenneth Choi (as Chimney), Jennifer Love Hewitt (as Maddie), and Ryan Guzman (as Eddie) should all be back, barring any major changes between seasons.
When will 9-1-1 Season 9 premiere?
An exact date has yet to be announced, but it will once again premiere in the fall, with 18 episodes set for Season 9. We’d expect a late September or early October premiere date.
It will be followed by the new 9-1-1: Nashville spinoff. Get all the details about that show here.
How did the 9-1-1 Season 8 finale end?
The 118 and Athena worked together to save victims of a building collapse. Eddie was on his way to the airport when he saw the news and showed up to help rescue Buck and Ravi (Anirudh Pisharody). After, Chimney declared that no one else was leaving the 118, meaning Eddie wasn’t moving back to Texas and Buck wasn’t transferring out.
“This is our firehouse. This is the 118. And it’s not just a number, it’s us. And you’re right, Buck. Things are never going to be the same again because Cap is gone. But leaving won’t change that. It won’t make you feel any less sad. It just means that you’ll be sad all alone. Bobby died so I could live, and it has screwed me up in ways I can’t fully express, but the truth is, he would have done that for any one of us. He knew that just coming into work every day, there’s a chance that one or more of us would not make it home, and his job above everything else was to make sure that we did.
And we are all standing here right now because of him. This team, we are his legacy. So we can miss him, and we can mourn him, and we can even curse his name, but we are not going to disrespect him by throwing away what he built right here. So you hang up your turnouts, you hit the showers, you go home, and you get some rest because we are all going to see each other on our next shift, right here, together. Understood?” Chimney checked, and Hen immediately responded with, “Copy that, Cap, I mean, Chim.”
The finale ended with Maddie having given birth to her and Chimney’s son Robert Nash Han, Athena selling the house she and Bobby were building together, Eddie moving back into his home, Buck looking for a new place, and Hen and Karen (Tracie Thoms) officially adopting Mara.
Who will be the 118’s new captain in 9-1-1 Season 9?
That’s still unclear, though it did seem like it could be Chimney after his speech near the end of the Season 8 finale. Both Aisha Hinds and Oliver Stark told TV Insider they’d be all for that when they stopped by our office to discuss the Season 8 finale.
“I think that Hen has tremendous respect for Chimney, and so I think that she would give him the support and the respect that that role requires. I think for Hen in particular, though the chief offered the position to her, she’s always been able to jump in and out of the role knowing that Bobby was coming back to it. And so I think this puts it in a different context for her,” Hinds said. “And so I think she felt comfortable kind of declining that position.”
Stark agreed. “It’s a job that Buck probably sees himself one day hoping to do, but I don’t think he would feel comfortable wanting that position now. I think he looks at Hen and Chimney and he’s like, ‘Those are the people that I look up to.’ They’re every bit cut from the same cloth as Bobby was, and I think he’d have nothing but admiration and respect for Chimney in the role.”
Is there a 9-1-1 Season 9 trailer?
Not yet. It’s too early for that. We’ll probably get a teaser over the summer revealing the premiere disaster, however, like we did for Season 7’s cruise ship and Season 8’s beenado.
