The Rookie’s Game-Changer: Why Fans Are Buzzing About This New Promotion

The Rookie featured player Deric Augustine gets upgraded to series regular for Season 8.

Per Deadline, Augustine has been promoted from having a recurring role on the series to being a full-fledged regular cast member ahead of The Rookie‘s eighth season. Augustine portrays Miles Penn, a two-year veteran of a Texas police force who transfers to the LAPD and has to start all over again as a rookie. Augustine made his debut as Penn on the Season 7 episode, “The Shot,” which also marked the debut of Patrick Keleher’s Seth Ridley.

Created by showrunner Alexi Hawley, The Rookie stars Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, a 45-year-old rookie at the LAPD who joins the force after being caught in the middle of a brazen daytime bank robbery. The series also stars Richard T. Jones, Alyssa Diaz, Melissa O’Neil, Eric Winter, Mekia Cox, and Shawn Ashmore, and has played host to a plethora of featured and guest stars since it first hit the airwaves in 2018. The Rookie is currently approaching its seventh season finale, which will air on May 13.

Expect a Powerful Season 7 Finale

The Rookie star Shawn Ashmore, who portrays attorney Wesley Evers, recently gave fans an idea of what they can expect from the series’ upcoming Season 7 finale while discussing the latest season of the hit police drama. “I got to do some great work with one of our recurring castmates who’s very, very strong, but I don’t want to give it away. But it’s a strong storyline,” Ashmore said. “I really, really enjoyed it. So I don’t want to spoil too much. But yeah, there’s some good stuff coming up. And the end of the season is pretty exciting too. I remember shooting that last scene being like, ‘Oh yeah, this is going to be a good one.’ There’s a lot to look forward to.”

As for what fans can look forward to when Season 8 of The Rookie arrives, Hawley himself promised that one fan-favorite guest star would be returning to the series. When asked how long Season 8 would run, Hawley declined to answer directly, although he did note that comedian Flula Borg’s “Skip Tracer Randy comes back to us, I think it’s [Episode] 17, in a really fun storyline.” Apart from confirming that a beloved character actor would be making his way back into the world of The Rookie, this also served as a tacit confirmation that Season 8 will be at least close to as long as Season 7, which came in at 18 episodes in total.

The Rookie is currently available for streaming on Disney+.
