Go Behind the Scenes of Ransom Canyon with Jack Schumacher

The actor shares his favorite photos from the set of the hit series.

While tensions on Ransom Canyon, the new dramatic Western streaming now on Netflix, tend to run high, things are markedly more relaxed for the series and its stars when the cameras aren’t rolling. “It was the most fun that I’ve had working on any project that I’ve ever done,” says Jack Schumacher, who plays Yancy Grey, a newcomer to the series’ titular Texas town. “It was really a dream come true.”

Over the course of nearly six months shooting in New Mexico, Schumacher and his cast mates had the chance to develop close friendships—“everyone was constantly hanging out,” he says—even if his character was often at odds with those played by his new friends. “Yancy in particular is such a cool character,” Schumacher says. “He has so much inner conflict and so much that he’s trying to make amends for—it’s great to get to play someone who wants to change and grow.”

Here, Schumacher opens his camera roll to T&C to share a behind-the-scenes look at the show.

“This is me and Lizzy Greene, who plays Lauren. I look rough every morning when I arrive on set, so those little gold under-eye strips are very important to make me look presentable. Lizzy was shooting some photos—she was the queen of the rodeo or something—and had to have really dramatic hair. We thought we both looked awesome and should definitely capture that.”

“I just love Paul Haapaniemi, who’s one of our writers. We were shooting a rodeo scene this day, and I think I was pitching him two ideas, both of which he shot down. That’s normally how it goes for me: I’m always like, ‘Hey, I’ve got an idea,’ and 75% of the time the response is, ‘Yeah, that’s not going to work.’ I think I wanted to be eating a sandwich in one scene, and Paul was explaining that it wouldn’t make sense.”

“During the filming of episode two, me, Garrett Wareing, Andrew Liner, and Marianly Tejada were shooting at Los Poblanos, which is this beautiful restaurant and hotel in Albuquerque. I think we were on our ninth Red Bulls of the day and messing around. All of the kids on the show are insane photographers; they have a million cameras and were always taking incredible photos on set, which I’m very grateful for.”

“For my birthday, which is June 8, they got me a beautiful cake that said, ‘You can do this, Yancy Pants.’ Yancy Pants became the nickname on set for me. It was a fantastic cake, but I was trying not to eat too much of it; I have a problem with sweets and once I start, I can’t stop.”

“I was shooting an intimate scene this day and had been cutting all
week, so I was delirious and very hungry. I had asked if I could get some simple carbs and so there were a few of those being delivered, but I was also like, ‘Hey, if there’s any other snacks for when I’m done that you can help load me up with..’ Basically, this is me robbing craft services to celebrate finishing that day.”

“Garrett and Lizzy were shooting their final day, or maybe their second to last day, so I just showed up to hang out. I like to be on set and watch them do their thing. We were all hanging out in between setups and having a fun last week.”

“I always kept dumbbells in my trailer to get the juices flowing. If
you’re on set 18 hours a day, you usually have a good chunk of time where you’re not shooting, so I would always try to work out when I could. I was wrapped at this point, but I had to do some kind of photo shoot, so I was like, all right, well we might as well get the muscles looking nice.”
