‘Desperate Housewives’, ‘Young Sheldon’ star dead at 71

Emmy award-winning actress Valerie Mahaffey has died after a battle with cancer, according to her publicist. She was 71.

According to Variety, Mahaffey died on May 30 in Los Angeles, California. The “Young Sheldon” actress’ husband, Joseph Kell, said the industry has now lost one of its most “endearing actresses.”

“I have lost the love of my life, and America has lost one of its most endearing actresses,” Kell said. “She will be missed.”

Mahaffey had an acting career spanning over four decades, her first work being “Tell Me My Name” in 1977, and her most recent being “The 8th Day.” She won a supporting comedy actress Emmy in 1992 for her role in “Northern Exposure.”

Born June 16, 1953, in Indonesia, she lived there until she was 11 before moving to Texas, according to her IMDb. She went to Austin High School, where she graduated in 1971.

She received her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of Texas.

The actress became more well-known after starring in the NBC daytime soap opera “The Doctors” from 1979-81.

She also became well-known for playing the role of the manipulative Alma Hodge in the hit show “Desperate Housewives” from 2006-07 and Victoria MacElroy in “Young Sheldon.”
