NCIS: Sydney Boss on That Shocking Finale Cliffhanger, Mackey’s Betrayal & “Bigger” Season 3 Plans

The team from NCIS: Sydney managed to clinch yet another victory crucial to saving lives in the gripping two-part finale of Season 2. However, the episode concluded with several key characters visibly unsettled.

During their mission to prevent a stolen stinger missile, specifically its explosive contents, from wreaking havoc, Mackey (portrayed by Olivia Swann) discovered that her casual romantic partner, Etienne (Johh Fabry), funded his so-called humanitarian projects through aiding terrorists. Moreover, it was revealed that Etienne had previously drugged Rankin (Lewis Fitz-Gerald) and inserted a remotely controlled pacemaker to manipulate him into compliance.

When Mackey confronted Etienne about his deception, valued at $1.7 billion, during a dinner, it escalated into a full-blown fight that sprawled across the restaurant. JD (Todd Lasance) arrived just in time to assist Mackey, decisively ending the confrontation by shooting Etienne. Back in Sydney, both Mackey and JD appeared shell-shocked, while Blue (Mavournee Hazel) stumbled upon a shocking discovery in her well-secured apartment.

TVLine had the opportunity to discuss with the showrunner Morgan O’Neill, a native of Sydney, about the emotionally charged final scenes and his visions for an even “bigger” Season 3.

TVLINE | Was the perspiration on the actors in the Darwin scenes real?
Indeed, it was. The northern part of Australia, unlike the northern U.S., is extremely tropical. Suggesting Darwin as a location to the network, I highlighted its distinctive frontier-town charm, exotic water and sky colors, and its population of saltwater crocodiles outnumbering its human residents. Not to mention, the relentless 40-degree heat paired with 95% humidity definitely made the sweat genuine.

TVLINE | Were your actors prepared for these conditions?
We tried to prep them, but really, nothing can fully prepare you for that kind of environment. It was intense, and I believe that the palpable atmosphere and visible sweat added authenticity that translated directly to the viewers at home.

TVLINE | What are Mackey’s and JD’s thoughts in the final scenes?
I’d love to hear your thoughts first. However, Mackey is likely feeling betrayed by Etienne, not really focusing on JD, whereas JD is probably thinking about her. This development is particularly ironic since JD had suspected Etienne from the start, which may reflect both his professional judgment and personal feelings.

TVLINE | Can you share more about the unexpected visitor in Blue’s apartment?
After the season finale, I enjoy hearing viewers’ theories. The mysterious woman with a lot of hair sitting in Blue’s living room certainly raises questions. Season 3 will address this early on, significantly expanding on this storyline.

TVLINE | Will Season 3 pick up right after these events?
Not immediately after, but the story will resume shortly following the events at the end of Season 2. It won’t be a direct continuation, but the gap won’t be significant either.

TVLINE | What can you tease about potential romantic developments for DeShawn or Evie?
Both Evie and DeShawn have a strong connection, and introducing a third person into their dynamic will definitely stir things up. Season 3 will test their relationship in new and interesting ways.

TVLINE | Any final hints for what’s coming in Season 3?
I must tread carefully with what I divulge, but I can promise that Season 3 will surpass the previous season in scope and drama. We’re really aiming high with the upcoming episodes.
