Star Wars: Is Cal Kestis Gay, Straight, or Bisexual?

Ever since he was introduced as a character in the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order video game, Cal Kestis became a favorite among fans because he had a pretty interesting character development arc in the first game and an even more entertaining storyline in the second game. Of course, many fans started speculating about his personal life and sexual preference, considering that fans always try to learn more about interesting characters. So, is Cal Kestis gay, straight, or bisexual?

Cal Kestis is straight. While his sexuality was left a mystery in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, it was finally revealed in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor that he was always straight. This was confirmed when Cal had a romance arc with his ally, Merrin, who fans have shipped with him since the first game.

Fans always thought that something was going on between Cal and Merrin ever since the Dathomirian Zabrak Nightsister started hanging out with the crew of the Stinger Mantis. This was finally answered in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor when Cal and Merrin kissed, as it was clear they both had feelings for one another ever since they first met. Now, let’s talk more about Cal’s sexuality.

Every time a new character gets introduced into an already established lore that is already quite popular, fans can’t help but ask more about the personal life of this character. The same goes for Cal Kestis, the main character of the Star Wars: Jedi video game series. Cal was introduced in Fallen Order, the series’ first game, as a young adult male on the run from the Empire because he used to be with the Jedi Order.

Along the way, Cal Kestis met new allies that helped him in his newfound mission to save Force-sensitive individuals from the wrath of the Empire. The journeys that he went through and the people that he met along the way contributed to his development, as Cal became a true Jedi Knight. Of course, while his character development was great, people can’t get enough of his personal life and his own interests.

Specifically, we are talking about Cal’s sexuality. That’s because it is common among fans to wonder what the character’s sexuality is, as many fans would love to find themselves in the shoes of a playable fictional character in the world of Star Wars. As such, some people wonder whether Cal could be either straight or a member of the LGBTQ community.

In Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Cal’s sexuality was still uncertain because he hardly had a romance arc in that game. After all, Fallen Order focused more on Cal Kestis’ journey toward maturity as a true Jedi Knight instead of his personal, romantic life. On top of that, Cal was dealing with self-doubts about whether or not he should try to live the life of a Jedi again. As such, there was hardly any room to introduce a true romance arc in the first game.

Fans started wondering about Cal Kestis’ sexuality in 2019 when the first game was launched. In the four years between Fallen Order and Survivor, fans wondered whether or not he could be a member of the LGBTQ community or if he was straight. And this was finally answered in the events of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

That’s because Survivor revealed that Cal Kestis was straight the entire time. But even though Cal is straight and isn’t a character representing the LGBTQ community, those who are members of the LGBTQ community should know that one of the game’s major characters is pansexual. And we are talking about Merrin.

Is Cal Kestis in a Relationship?
As mentioned, Jedi: Survivor revealed that Cal Kestis was straight all along, ending four years of speculations regarding his sexuality. Of course, it can be odd to try to speculate the sexuality of a Jedi, considering that we all know that Jedi are forbidden to have romantic or sexual ties with other people. And this was probably the reason why it took time for the creators of Star Wars Jedi to decide whether or not Cal should have a romance arc.

Cal Kestis didn’t have a romantic partner in the four years that have passed since the first game was released. In fact, he wasn’t in a relationship with anyone in the five in-universe years that passed between Fallen Order and Survivor. However, fans were shipping Cal Kestis with Merrin since they first met.

Even though it was revealed that Merrin was pansexual, which means that she isn’t attracted to any particular person based on sex or gender, fans were still shipping her with Cal because they had a great dynamic with one another in the first game. However, it was never revealed in Fallen Order whether or not they were in a relationship with one another.

The earlier portions of Survivor also didn’t reveal anything between Cal and Merrin. However, as the game progressed, it was clear that they were both attracted to one another. Merrin made the first move by kissing Cal, who told her she took her time expressing her feelings for him.

This makes the entire dynamic between them more romantic than it was compared to the first game, as it is now established that they have feelings for one another. And probably the only thing that held this relationship back was the fact that Cal was a Jedi Knight and was forbidden to have any romantic partners.

Star Wars: How Old Was Cal Kestis During Order 66?
Nevertheless, we know that there is no longer a Jedi Order holding Cal Kestis back from having a romantic partner. We can even make the argument that this rigid rule was one of the things that held the Jedi Order back. Nevertheless, Cal is not just a Jedi but is his own person following his own path in life, especially now that any Jedi survivors in the galaxy have to make independent decisions. That means that it is up to him whether or not a romantic relationship with another person is truly the best for him.

We all know what romance did for the Jedi Order (ehem, Anakin Skywalker). But it doesn’t seem like Cal has the same demeanor and obsessive attachment to other people that Anakin had in the past. Of course, we just have to wait and see what the future has in store for Cal and his relationships with the people around him.
