In fact, he wasn’t in a relationship with anyone in the five in-universe years that passed between Fallen Order and Survivor. However, fans were shipping Cal Kestis with Merrin since they first met.
Even though it was revealed that Merrin was pansexual, which means that she isn’t attracted to any particular person based on sex or gender, fans were still shipping her with Cal because they had a great dynamic with one another in the first game. That means that it is up to him whether or not a romantic relationship with another person is truly the best for him.
We all know what romance did for the Jedi Order (ehem, Anakin Skywalker). But it doesn’t seem like Cal has the same demeanor and obsessive attachment to other people that Anakin had in the past.
