Sorry Fire Country fans, it seems like Bode and Gabriela are officially done for good. Fire Country Season 3, Episode 7 “False Alarm” brings back one of the show’s original couples – Jake (Jordan Calloway) and Gabriela (Stephanie Arcila), just as it seems to cement that Bode is ready to move on with Audrey (Leven Rambin). For a show that has always more or less gravitated around the main couple of Gabriela and Bode, this is not just a departure, it’s a gamble. And it comes just one episode before the show’s midseason finale.
Gabriela and Bode (Max Thieriot) don’t really interact in the episode, and it makes sense that they wouldn’t after their breakup – if we can even call it a breakup considering Gabriela didn’t even want to label what they were doing as dating. But Fire Country has been teasing a possible Bode and Audrey pairing since Audrey showed up as a cadet alongside Bode. Now that the two have graduated and are going to work together, seeing them date is the obvious next step.
The curveball, however, is Jake and Gabriela. At first, it feels like they’re just two friends commiserating over their shared troubles. Gabriela has been struggling since the beginning of the season and has increasingly been looking for the wrong ways to avoid dealing with her issues – which included Bode, for a while. Jake is feeling sorry for himself because he feels like a lousy father from Gen wanting to stay with her biological family. So really, the two of them are just licking their wounds when Gabriela brings up the fact that they used to date. (Pretty seriously, at that.)
How Gabriela and Jake went from breaking up to having sex in the car is hard to tell. For Gabriela, it seems like just another mistake in a series of bad decisions. For Jake, who has actually been making pretty good decisions of late, it feels like a bad omen. And for the possibility of Bode and Gabriela actually getting back together anytime soon, it feels like a death knell. If anything, now it’s much more likely the show will actually go ahead and explore Bode and Audrey.
And the thing with that is that the two have chemistry. It might actually work. But will Fire Country go back to the original plan of Bode and Gabriela? Our money is on the show returning to them at some point because all the roads usually lead back to the original couple, but there’s always a chance Bode and Audrey are endgame instead.
Captain Camden Casey (Jared Padalecki) is probably getting a new spinoff. If Bode and Audrey work out, where does that leave Gabriela? Not saying off the show, but there’s always a possibility there are new horizons for her to pursue. And while it doesn’t seem like this thing with Jake is anything more than a hookup, the two did have something meaningful before. So who knows? It might be worth finding out if there’s still something there. Stranger things have happened in procedural land.
Fire Country is available to stream on Paramount Plus.
