“She’s that extra person at the family dinner,” costar Bridget Moynahan said.
Jenny McCarthy may not be on camera for the Blue Bloods Sunday dinners, but she’s still an honorary part of the Reagan family tradition.
In a preview clip from Tuesday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Blue Bloods costars Donnie Wahlberg and Bridget Moynahan share the details about their unseen dinner guest, who just so happens to be married to Wahlberg. “She’s that extra person at the family dinner,” Moynahan tells host Drew Barrymore. “The phone is always there, and in between takes it’s like, ‘Hi, honey,’ ‘Hi, honey,’ and we’re all, ‘Jenny!” So she’s always there.”
Wahlberg wed McCarthy in 2014 and has starred on Blue Bloods since 2010, portraying Det. Danny Reagan, the son of Tom Selleck’s Commissioner Frank Reagan.
But it’s not merely Blue Bloods dinner scenes that McCarthy is present for. Wahlberg reveals the sweet way the couple stays close while he’s in New York filming the long-running CBS series and McCarthy is in Los Angeles taping The Masked Singer. “We now have the luxury of being able to sleep together when we’re apart,” he says. “So whoever’s going to sleep first just calls the other one. We spend the whole night together when we’re not together.”
Wahlberg clarifies that it’s out of a desire to be together more than anything. “Look, that’s not that we’re insecure or that we need to do this, we love to do it,” he notes. Barrymore reassures him, saying that he was one of the first guests on her show to make her believe technology might be a good thing.
“It’s like, why not?” Wahlberg concludes. “We’re gonna miss each other, why wake up saying, ‘Oh God I missed you, I woke up at 3 in the morning.’ I tell her, ‘If you wake up at 3 in the morning, can’t sleep, just tap me on the shoulder through the phone and I’ll wake up and hang out with you.'”
