One of the stars of Young Sheldon was blindsided by the news that the series would end with Season 7.
The Big Bang Theory prequel series, Young Sheldon, is coming to an end with its current seventh season. Ahead of the finale, series star Annie Potts has questioned the decision to end the show.
In the series, Potts plays Sheldon’s grandmother, Connie Tucker, aka “Meemaw.” After filming the final episode of Young Sheldon, Potts shared a video from the set as a way of saying farewell. She followed this up by sharing her true thoughts on the show ending during a new interview with AssignmentX, revealing how it came as a surprise, pointing to the continued popularity of the series.
Potts said, “It’s sad, because I didn’t expect it. We’re the Number One show on network TV, and the Number One show on Netflix. Who cancels this?”
Young Sheldon Will Be Going Out on Top
The show’s executive producers have previously explained why they wanted to wrap up Young Sheldon. One big reason is that The Big Bang Theory established that Sheldon goes off to college at age 14, and they also see the value in ending the show while it’s still going strong. At this point in the story, they say that it just felt natural to wrap it up.
“There [are] certain things that we know happened in Sheldon’s life when he’s 14, as the character is this season, and we started talking about the future of the show and what it would look like,” EP Steve Holland said, per TribLive.com. “We know he goes off to Caltech at 14. It just felt like the right time to end the show and to end it strong while it was still on top.”
EP Chuck Lorre added, “That’s a level of hubris that I think gets in the way of doing a good job. You do what feels right. You do what feels appropriate for the characters and the relationships, the tone of the show. You do stuff that touches yourself, and then you hope someone agrees with you.”
The story will continue in a way, as a spinoff series is in development at CBS. Not yet titled, the spinoff will primarily follow Georgie (Montana Jordan) and Mandy (Emily Osment) as they start their own family. It’s not yet clear which other stars from Young Sheldon could be making appearances, as the show is still getting written.
The series finale of Young Sheldon will air on CBS on May 16.
