From frenemies to lovers, to nothing, to power friends, Ghosts’ Hetty (Rebecca Wisocky) and Trevor (Asher Grodman) have one of the most fascinating relationships in sitcom history. In Season 4 alone, we’ve seen them plot against each other to a hilarious and surprisingly heartfelt degree, before realizing they’d be far more powerful if they teamed up against the other ghosts in the house. Now officially in their “Power Friends” era, Hetty and Trevor spend much of their time scheming, often making themselves look appropriately silly in the process.
Ahead of this week’s big Trevor episode, in which the house’s youngest ghost learns that he’s a father, I sat down with Grodman to talk all things T-Money, and of course, I had to ask about the future of our favorite dead will-they-won’t-they couple. “I can tease that we’re going to keep being allies and enemies at the same time.” He told Collider. He went on to explain that while the initial plan for Hetty and Trevor was never about romance, it may end up there in the future.
“What’s fun about those two, and it’s one of the reasons why Rebecca [Wisocky] and I really from the pilot, or if not the pilot shortly thereafter, were lobbying for something like that, for those two to be entangled. A huge thank you to Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, our showrunners, for being down to clown with us on this. For us, it was never about romance, really. I mean that may be where it ends up, but it was all the other stuff that’s so exciting — their egos, their pride, how they think about money, and so they have a hierarchy in life. In those, they’re so similar. And yet when it comes to sex and how they see the world in terms of what should be allowed, what should not be allowed, they’re very different. There’s just so much room for conflict. It’s a very combustible relationship. The idea of them colluding against each other and then colluding with each other, and there’s just so much pent-up passion in both of these characters, it’s so fun to play.”
Elaborating on his own love for the characters and their relationship, he went on to say: “I think that the Trevor/Hetty dynamic has become one of the most colorful in the show, so we want to keep playing with it, and I hope we will. I think we will. I think the H-Money Nation will be in for some treats.”
Are Hetty and Trevor Getting the Slow Burn Treatment on ‘Ghosts’?
With Ghosts landing a double renewal at CBS for at least two more seasons on the network, there are big opportunities ahead for the writers to play with more drawn-out storylines across the next 44 episodes. During our conversation, I asked Grodman what he hopes to see in Seasons 5 and 6, and aside from more of Trevor’s job — and some spoilers you’ll have to check back at Collider for — he also mentioned continuing to dig into the dynamic between Trevor and Hetty, saying:
“And of course, there is that very fun and combustible dynamic in the Trevor/Hetty world that I would love to continue playing with and fighting within, and having all the different dynamics that that can play out.”
Grodman is far from the only one on board for their unique dynamic, either. When I spoke with Rebecca Wisocky earlier this season, she said: “I’m so happy, and I feel personally gratified that there are so many H-Money/Tretty shippers out there who are so invested in their relationship.” Mirroring Grodman’s thoughts about the deliciously complex dynamics at play between the two characters, she said, “Asher Grodman and I have had so much fun talking about the relationship and where it can go. Both of us enjoy the parts of it that are about competition and conniving a plot. They’re so very different, and yet they’re so similar as creatures. So, I’m very happy that the fans are invested in seeing more of them together.”
Stay tuned at Collider for the rest of our conversation with Grodman, and don’t miss the next episode of Ghosts on CBS tonight at 8:30 PM ET. You can stream previous episodes on Paramount+ in North America and Netflix around the world.
