The second season of Tracker ended its run this past Sunday with Colter Shaw returning home to Echo Ridge. While Justin Hartley’s Colter was back in his hometown to solve a case involving missing children from across the country, the world-famous rewardist eventually stumbled upon a world-shattering discovery of his own in the season finale. The CBS procedural has already been renewed for a third season which will certainly look to unpack what the newly unraveled Shaw family secret means for Colter and his siblings. Now, we know when production begins on the new season. Shworunner Elwood Reid, in a conversation with Screen Rant, has revealed that production on Tracker Season 3 will kick off later this year, in July.
“Yeah, we will be back in two weeks,” Reid said, referencing the return of the show’s writers’ room, “and we start filming in July. I think it’s the 16th or something like that.” This is good news for fans of the show as it indicates that the beloved procedural will return soon. While an official date hasn’t been announced for the season three premiere, Tracker will air during the 2025-2026 broadcast season. When the show does return, there is a massive issue that requires immediate resolution. The Season 2 finale implied that Colter’s mother, Mary (Wendy Crewson), was the mastermind behind the death of his father, Ashton Shaw (Lee Tergesen). It is one case that Colter has not been able to solve all his life, but has made progress in recent times, namely: his brother, Russell (Jensen Ackles), was in fact not responsible for pushing their dad off a cliff and Ashton Shaw was somehow involved with a clandestine government agency.
Tracker Season 2 was an emotional one on so many levels, as several of Colter’s cases crept beneath the surface, revealing the humanity of those involved. From the season’s very first case involving Gina Picket and Colter’s relationship with Gina’s sister Camille (Floriana Lima) really help set the tone. Looking back, Reid reveals that its those emotional moments that stand out the most for him in Season 2. “I’m really proud of some of the emotional moments in the show, which I think really resonate. I do like when Colter comes into town and has interactions with local cops or characters. That’s the heart of the show. There’s a humanity to it, and it’s fun. There’s an element of emotion in each of those scenes.”
Who is Returning for ‘Tracker’ Season 3? Like most procedurals, the cast of Tracker involves a broad ensemble that varies from episode to episode, but for Season 3, it is expected that Colter’s main team will return. That includes Abby McEnany as Velma Bruin, Eric Graise as Bobby Exley, and Fiona Rene as Reenie Greene. The show introduced Bobby’s cousin, Randy (Chris Lee), in Season 2, with Randy initially covering for Bobby. Now the pair work together, providing technical support and superior hacking skills for Colter, and it seems Randy will stick around for Season 3. Colter’s family, Ackles as Russell, Crewson as Mary, Tergesen as Ashton, and Melissa Roxburgh as Dory, will most likely return as guest stars in the coming season.
