Why ‘The Rookie’ Keeps Throwing Curveballs at Chenford — And Why Fans Are Frustrated

I’m a big fan of ABC’s The Rookie, but I have to admit that the season finale (which aired on May 13) was a little disappointing for me. We didn’t get a lot of closure about Monica Stevens (Bridget Regan) being back (except that she’s somehow a free woman!), and Oscar Hutchinson (Matthew Glave) is once again in the wind, even after John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) tries to capture him. But there’s one more loose end from this season that is currently driving me nuts. For all of Season 7, I’ve been thinking that Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) and Tim Bradford (Eric Winter), a.k.a. Chenford, are finally going to be reunited. So, imagine my dismay when I watched the finale to discover that not only are Chenford nowhere closer to becoming a real couple, there are even more annoying obstacles in their way now.

Chenford Has Had a Very Complicated History in ‘The Rookie’

Even though Lucy and Tim have often felt like #couplegoals to me, their entire romantic history has been a complicated one. The two characters had serious chemistry right from the beginning, but it’s not like they could have acted on it. Lucy starts out as Tim’s rookie in Season 1, which meant that Tim was Lucy’s direct superior (a factor that could have led to some serious HR issues). But their connection only continued to grow. In Season 4, the couple acts on their feelings for each other, but it’s while they’re pretending to be other people on an undercover mission. They can’t go on denying how they feel about each other, though, and Chenford finally became a reality in Season 5, much to my delight.

The two are such a great couple because they often act like yin and yang. Lucy is sweet and optimistic, and Tim is gruff and cynical. Their differences lead to plenty of light-hearted bickering, which adds a fun dynamic to the series. But then The Rookie writers decided to break my heart. In Season 6, Tim abruptly breaks up with Lucy, claiming that Lucy would be better off without him. The series has spent all of these subsequent episodes following Tim as he works on fixing himself, and Lucy as she tries to process her devastation. This season there have been several hook-up situations, where it’s clear to the viewers that the two are still pining away for each other. Even though they try to act like they don’t want to become a couple again, it’s so obvious that they’re meant to be together.

There Are Even More Roadblocks in the Way of Chenford’s Happiness in ‘The Rookie’
