It’s the wedding we’ve all been waiting for. Chicago PD is not an especially sentimental show. One could easily make the case that it’s the bleakest and most cynical title in the One Chicago franchise, which is what makes the pending ceremony between Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) so important. And we finally have photos.
NBC released photos from the Burzek wedding, which will take place during the season 12 finale, “Vows.” The photos don’t tell the entire story, of course, but they do provide some very important context for a romance that started in the first season and has withstood two broken engagements. For one, we can finally get a look at Burgess’ dress after Marina Squerciati teased multiple versions on social media.
Chicago PD is not one for big celebratory moments the way Chicago Fire or Chicago Med has been in the past. It’s a show about characters that don’t draw attention to themselves, and value their privacy. It’s the reason Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) and Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) married in a small ceremony at a Chicago courthouse and decided not to invite any of their coworkers.
Burzek’s wedding takes place on May 21
The actress posed in different dresses and asked fans to select their favorite back in February. She joked that she was “asked to find a dress” for the monumental Chicago PD episode, and it looks like she crushed it based on the photos of her and Flueger grinning ear to ear. It’s difficult to tell who will be attending the wedding based on the framing of the pics, but we now have confirmation that Kevin Atwater will be Ruzek’s best man.
LaRoyce Hawkins, the actor who plays Atwater, has been manifesting this best man role for months. He told TV Line that he considered the character to be the “honorary third wheel of this relationship” so it’s only right that he be the one by Ruzek’s side. Atwater can be seen standing next to Bob (Jack Coleman), Ruzek’s dad and the man who recently set up a trust fund for Burzek’s daughter, Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams). Makayla can also be spotted in the first look photos.
“I think everyone’s unsure how we’re going to accomplish this thing that the fans have waited for for 12 years and still respect the tone of the show,” Squerciati told TV Line in November. “Because what I’m thinking is very much like This Is Us. Like, it’s not respectful of the tone.” The actress’ notes about tone were taken to heart, as the show has seemingly found a happy medium.
We’re happy that Burgess and Ruzek will actually have a ceremony in which other IU members will be in attendance. We’re also pleased that the ceremony will maintain its intimacy, and focus on only the characters that matter. The IU may not have much time to celebrate, however, since the season 12 finale also marks the showdown between the team and crooked Deputy Chief Reid (Shawn Hatosy).
