The Rookie Season 7 has run a successful course with its finale airing Tuesday, May 13, on ABC. The procedural drama has, thankfully, been renewed for an eighth season, which will further cover and expand on the stories of some of our favorite characters. There has been a lot of change so far this season, with Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) recently passing her sergeant exams, among other things. The official synopsis for the season finale reads: “John and Harper work together to catch Oscar; Angela investigates a bank robbery; Lucy and Tim learn to adapt to her new schedule, and Miles’ first date takes an unexpected turn.” So, what does the season finale actually mean for Chenford?
Since their breakup in The Rookie Season 6, showrunner Alexi Hawley has carefully orchestrated a potential road back to each other, with a couple of steamy meetups along the way. Looking ahead to the season finale, Hawley has discussed what the episode holds for Chenford. Quizzed by ScreenRant on whether the lovebirds will make progress during the finale, the showrunner sounded optimistic regarding the direction Chenford is heading. Hawley’s comments read:
“Yes, I think they can. At the end of the day, obviously, there is another practical obstacle, which is the shift differences, the fact that they’re not really awake at the same time, but we’ve been driving towards this all season, obviously, and sort of repairing their relationship and having them go through the obstacles and the work that needs to get done to hopefully get back together. So yeah, I think we’re heading in a good direction.”
Career Advancements Come With Their Own Challenges on ‘The Rookie’
As previously mentioned, the couple has had a rough time recently, but those bumps have begun to straighten out as well. Lucy struggled to trust Tim after he ended their relationship this season. Despite her forgiveness being applied, the newly minted sergeant has not returned to Tim. Her latest appointment does present some unique challenges, given that she has been assigned to the night shift. Hawley had previously teased how the promotion might affect Chenford in the future, saying, “We’re going to see her trying to deal with the obstacle of working the night shift and the effect that has on her sort of physically and mentally. And then also, how does she navigate it with Tim now that they’re on opposite schedules?”
In the Season 6 finale of the police procedural drama, Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) decided to break up with Lucy, a decision that hurt her. With Season 7 coming to an end, it’d be nice to see this run end with the pair potentially giving their relationship another shot.
Tune in to ABC next Tuesday, May 13, to watch the Season 7 finale of The Rookie.
