The Rookie Actor Drops Bombshell: ‘I’m Done’—What Does This Mean for the Show?

“The Rookie” actor Patrick Keleher, who plays Seth Ridley on the ABC procedural, shared an update about his future on the show.

“I am done in season 7,” Keleher confirmed during an April interview with ScreenRant. As for whether he’ll be back during season 8, Keleher said he has “no idea.”

Keleher’s character, Seth, was fired from the LAPD during a March episode after Officer Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) raised concerns that he might be lying about his cancer diagnosis. Seth refused to take a blood test to confirm his situation and was subsequently fired.

Seth returned to “The Rookie” during an April episode after he successfully sued to get his position back. Seth earned a reputation as a liar throughout the season, but he redeemed himself by saving John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) during a shootout, getting shot in the leg in the process. Seth had his leg amputated as a result of the injury and left the Field Training Officer program once again.

If Seth does return for season 8, Keleher has no idea what’s next for him.

“I still don’t know what that means for Seth to be legless. What does that mean as a cop with the LAPD? I remember when I came to set one day, I was talking to one of our ex-LAPD officers on set. And he’s like, ‘Yeah, man. You lose a leg, you’re out,’” Keleher told ScreenRant. “But you never know. You never know what’ll happen.”

During his final episode, Seth told his fiancée, Tamara Collins (Dylan Conrique), that he lied about having cancer. He called himself a “coward” who repeatedly “make[s] himself a victim.” Tamara subsequently ended their relationship.

As for Seth’s true motive for lying, Keleher said “The Rookie” creator Alexi Hawley told him he thinks Seth comes from a lower-class family and learned to lie to fit in with his upper-class friends.

Keleher made his “Rookie” debut during the season 7 premiere in January. The season 7 finale is set to air on Tuesday, May 13. ABC officially renewed the show for season 8 in April.
