There’s a new sheriff in town: TVLine can exclusively reveal that Will Trent has cast Yul Vazquez (Severance) in a major recurring role that will potentially carry into Season 4 of the ABC drama.
Vazquez will first appear in the penultimate Season 3 episode, which is set to air Tuesday, May 6 at 8/7c. The hour, which was directed by series star Erika Christensen, introduces Sheriff Caleb, “a rugged, handsome, fiercely stubborn hometown hero” who “uses his self-appointed status as a constitutional sheriff to protect his community and has little patience for outside interference,” according to the official character breakdown. When Will and Faith “are sent to assist on a high-profile case, Caleb makes it clear he doesn’t want their help” — that is, until the investigation takes a turn and he is forced to reconsider.
A promo for Season 3, Episode 17, which is embedded above, offers a glimpse of Caleb in action. It also tells us that he’s a “newfound enemy” who holds a “shocking secret,” but stops short of revealing exactly what he’s keeping concealed. (When we asked executive producers Liz Heldens and Daniel Thomsen if Caleb is poised to be a Big Bad, Heldens played coy and delivered the following one-word answer: “Maybe.”)

Vazquez’s vast list of TV credits includes Apple TV+’s Severance (on which he recurred as former Macrodata refiner Petey); HBO’s The Outsider, Treme and White House Plumbers; MGM+’s Godfather of Harlem and Hotel Cocaine; NBC’s Midnight, Texas; and Starz’s Magic City. Films include Runaway Bride, Bad Boys II, War of the Worlds, American Gangster, The A-Team, Captain Phillips and The Infiltrator.
New episodes of Will Trent air Tuesdays at 8 pm on ABC (and stream next day on Hulu). The series, which has already been renewed for Season 4, wraps its 18-episode third season on May 13.
