Will Trent Season 4 Gets a Gritty New Sheriff—And He’s No Fan of Outsiders

ABC’s hit procedural drama Will Trentis ramping up for a high-stakes Season 4 with a major casting coup. The series has tapped Severancestar Yul Vazquez for a pivotal recurring role, as the Georgia Bureau of Investigation faces its most complex cases yet. Vazquez, best known for his haunting turn as the mysterious Petey in the Apple TV+ mind-bending thriller series, will step into the role of Sheriff Caleb, a role that will potentially carry into Season 4 of the ABC drama.

Season 3, Episode 17, “Why Hello, Sheriff”, which was directed by series star Erika Christensen, introduces the character Sheriff Caleb as a “rugged, handsome, fiercely stubborn hometown hero who uses his self-appointed status as a constitutional sheriff to protect his community and has little patience for outside interference,” according to the official character breakdown. When Will and Faith are sent to assist with a high-profile case, Caleb makes it clear he doesn’t want their help,” that is, until the investigation takes a turn, and he is forced to reconsider.

Will Trent first premiered in January 2023 with a plot that revolves around the titular character, played by Ramon Rodriguez, a Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) detective with a troubled past. Based on Karin Slaughter’s New York Times bestselling series of the same name, the show also stars Christensen, Iantha Richardson, Jake McLaughlin, and Sonja Sohn in notable roles. While Will Trent’s analytical genius and emotional intelligence will once again be central to unraveling the mystery, it’s Sheriff Caleb’s moral ambiguity that will keep both the characters and the audience guessing in the coming episodes. A synopsis for the next episode reads:

“While investigating a murder in a rural town and clashing with the local sheriff, Will uncovers surprising truths about his past; Angie makes an unexpected discovery; Ormewood continues to struggle with his diagnosis.”

What Can We Expect From ‘Will Trent’ Season 4?

With just two episodes remaining in the third season, the series has already been renewed for a fourth season on ABC. Season 4 will consist of 18 episodes, and there’s a lot that could happen going forward. All through Season 3, Will grapples with the fallout of arresting Angie Polaski (Christensen) for covering up a murder, which eventually culminates in their breakup. It is almost certain that Season 4 will explore Will’s emotional healing and the internal conflicts around his fledgling connection with Assistant DA Marion Alba (Gina Rodriguez).
Past Will Trent seasons have always had intense story arcs around investigations, from serial killers to child trafficking, so expect Season 4 to crank up the pressure, with more cases, perhaps tied to Rafael’s gang or political corruption. Will Trent Season 3, Episode 17 airs on ABC on May 6, 2025. Catch up on Hulu and stay tuned to Collider for more.
