Jay’s Fate in Ghosts Season 5: Did CBS Just Write Itself Into a Plot Trap?

As the very name of the show suggests, Ghosts is largely about the spirits, but Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) are the Living couple at the heart of the narrative. Sam has the unique ability to see the ghosts in CBS’ Ghosts, but Jay does not, so he is often left peripheral to the story’s action. This balance worked for the original U.K. version of Ghosts, with 34 episodes total over 5 seasons, but with CBS’ version at double the episode count to date (with at least two more seasons to come), Jay’s limitations are becoming a problem.

Jay can see the spirits in Ghosts season 4, episodes 8 and 9, but the ability is short-lived despite being teased ahead of the season premiere. While the show has made great comedy out of Jay’s metaphysical limits, such as him accidentally sharing secrets in Ghosts season 4, episode 17, the trope of Jay not knowing what’s happening is feeling less and less sustainableGhosts season 4, episode 21, “Kyle,” introduces a new character played by Superstore‘s Ben Feldman, who vindicates Jay’s chief complaint about the ghost imbalance.
