The Golden Bachelor stars Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist revealed how age was a major factor in their divorce conversations.
Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist have addressed the harsh criticism from viewers in a longer version of their Good Morning America interview.
On Friday, the estranged couple revealed they were headed for divorce just three months after sparking tears during their televised wedding.
Speaking to journalist Juju Chang, the 72-year-old stated: “We’ve kind of come to the conclusion mutually that it’s time for us to dissolve our marriage.”
This sent shockwaves across fans who tuned into the inaugural season of The Bachelor spin-off and watched the pair fall in love.
As many slammed the twosome and labeled them “time wasters,” others questioned how they could part ways after tying the knot in January.
In new footage released by ABC, Juju asked the duo: “What do you say to the nerdy love people like me who think, ‘love will find a way.’ How do you give up after three months?”
To which Theresa responded: “I think maybe it’s part of the fact that we are older and we do have homes and we do have children and we do have grandchildren.
“And I’m not saying it’s impossible [that] the love can’t overcome that, but it did play a major role.”
After the broadcaster questioned if they had considered a “commuter marriage,” Theresa added: “Because we’re older we wanted it immediately [to] be together.”
“When you’re young you got the time to be in a commuter marriage,” she added as Gerry divulged: “We didn’t see it as an option.”
The pair admitted they had begun discussions about divorce “three weeks ago”
“We had some really good conversations, probably the most honest conversations we’d had,” Gerry said: “It was like the lightbulb went off that we were of the same mind.”
Theresa noted: “There wasn’t any fighting. It was a very gentle conversation.”
The duo added that they saw a couples counselor who helped them navigate the decision, as Gerry continued: “I think it was very useful.”
