Tru Valentino’s Aaron Thorsen could return to The Rookie in future seasons. First introduced in season 4, episode two, Aaron was a falsely imprisoned murder suspect, who was eventually acquitted of all charges. In an attempt to bring about justice and to clear his name, Aaron quickly found his way to the police academy and became a brilliant officer. Unfortunately, Aaron has not appeared in season 7, and there has been no word about a return for The Rookie season 8.
In an interview with Collider, showrunner Alexi Hawley explained that Aaron could be reintroduced if the story calls for it. When asked about the potential return, Hawley explained that there is a significant likelihood that Aaron will reappear later in the show’s run, but it will not come “in the short term.“ Because the show is about rookie officers, Hawley believes that rookies need to continually be cycled through the system, which means that Aaron’s reintroduction will be delayed. Check out his quote below:
Yeah, no, no, definitely, for sure. I mean, these are the hard things you do as a showrunner, and in the writers’ room, is to try and keep the storytelling moving forward and making hard choices about what we’re going to focus on and what we’re not. That being said I love Tru and I have loved Aaron’s storyline, and so, yeah, I think we’ll definitely see him again down the road... I mean, I don’t want to make you feel like it’s going to be in the short term necessarily. But, yes, no, look, I agree. And again, it’s the embarrassment of riches of having so many great characters to service, but also feeling like we need to, I mean, it’s called The Rookie. We keep needing new rookies along the way, and you just have to navigate it.
What Aaron’s Return Means For The Rookie
Rookies Will Continuously Reappear
Aaron is a unique character, as he has spent ample time on the wrong side of the law, which has helped to give him a new perspective that other officers could not share. Hawley previously told ScreenRant that Aaron is “very much alive in our universe” and only left the series due to creative story-driven issues. Aside from a few scattered voice acting roles, Valentino has not appeared in any major productions since leaving The Rookie, so he likely has room in his schedule to return, if Hawley and the writers ever find space for a reintroduction.
A return for Aaron, however, would mean less space to explore other characters, which is exactly what Hawley described as the primary issue with his potential reappearances. The show is meant to explore a variety of rookie officers, and bringing back experienced and skilled officers would take away from opportunities for the audience to embrace those new stars. The Rookie already has an expansive cast, which makes it difficult to find time to showcase all of these roles appropriately. Unfortunately, Aaron’s return would take away chances for viewers to begin to love other rookies.
Our Take On Aaron’s Return To The Rookie
Aaron’s Return Should Be Delayed
Delaying a reintroduction for Aaron is the right decision for The Rookie, even if it is disappointing for audiences. Aaron is a brilliant character, and Valentino’s excellent performance helped to set him apart even in a strong cast. Still, his absence will only make his return more exciting when he finally does return in a cameo role, a guest role, or even as a main member of the cast. Focusing more on the younger stars will make the show more engaging, so that his return can see him interacting with other characters that audiences have come to love.
