“Post Mortem” was an excellent Chicago Fire episode. It was unique, the storytelling was tense, and the performances by the series led were all strong. There was a lot going on, so the return of one Sam Carver (Jake Lockett) was overshadowed. The promo for the next episode confirms that we will be getting the Carver and Violet (Hanako Greensmith) reunion that we’ve been waiting on, but it has a feeling of squandered potential on the heels of recent casting news.
The promo sees Violet and Novak (Jocelyn Hudon) take center stage after missing the events of “Post Mortem.” The latter notices that a medic has been improperly taking care of patients, and is desperate to locate the offender before someone loses their lives. She enlists Carver for help, leading to a tense moment where the duo confronts a civilian with a shotgun.
Under normal circumstances, we’d be absolutely thrilled to see Carver and Violet back together. These two had a tense argument the last time they were together, and Violet has been carrying the guilt of that exchange for weeks. She obviously still has feelings for the firefighter, despite the fact that she’s dating someone else. The reason we’re not thrilled? Well, because Carver and Violet’s relationship isn’t going anywhere.
It was confirmed that Carver will not be coming back to Chicago Fire next season, assuming the show gets picked up for another season. The character will be written off alongside one of Violet’s closest friends, Darren Ritter (Daniel Kyri), which will make her devastation even worse.
It’s been a long road for both Carver and Violet, from flirtation to romance to their aforementiond falling out. Both have had to contend with traumatic events and personal demons, and it seemed as though they would have time to sort things out and determine where they stand. Now that Carver has a handful of episodes left (if that), his dynamic with Violet feels like its already over.
We know Carver and Violet’s romance is doomed
We know the series won’t have enough time to properly resolve a relationship we though was going to last for the foreseeable future. This makes the promo, and the reunion between Carver and Violet feel anticlimactic at best. If anything, the teased adventure only serves to shine a light on how little time we have left with both of them.
All we can do is hope for the best with regard to Carver’s remaining episodes, and pray that the Chicago Fire writers don’t write off whoever turns out to Violet’s next love interest. It’s starting to become an unfortunate trend.
