Matt Bomer responds to ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ petition

Sorry, ladies (and dudes): You aren’t going to be seeing Matt Bomer in a Red Room of Pain anytime soon.

The actor has responded to a Change.org petition to have himself and Alexis Bledel replace the recently announced Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson as the leads in the Fifty Shades of Grey movie adaptation. (Lorelai would certainly not approve!)

Fifty Shades of Grey

More than 40,000 people have picked this as their important cause, signing their support to a petition that reads, in part, “Matt Bomer is the PERFECT DESCRIPTION OF CHRISTIAN GREY AND ALEXIS BLEDEL IS THE PERFECT ACTRESS TO REPRESENT ANASTASIA STEELE and if THEY ARE NOT, NOBODY WILL BE…So please PLEASE, all of the GREYsessed and Bomerettes in the world NEED those actors. They always will be for us the Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. WE CAN DO ANYTHING GUYS, ANYTHING.”

Well, not anything. At the premiere of the fifth season of White Collar, Bomer told ETonline, “I’m so grateful for the fans and touched. I’m looking forward to seeing the movie with Charlie and Dakota.” The actor may not be embracing his inner Christian Grey, but eager fans should feel free to use their imaginations: He has stripped down for a part before (Thank you, Magic Mike).

This is just a bit of the outrage that has come from fans of the popular erotic trilogy. Producers should take heart: Fans of the book are always upset by the initial casting choices for popular movie adaptations — even when “The Girl on Fire” has a YA-free connotation.
