9-1-1: Nashville, the next spinoff set in the 9-1-1 universe, has just found another series regular. The casting follows the announcement that Chris O’Donnell (Batman and Robin, NCIS: Los Angeles) would be starring as one of the leads. Per Variety, it’s now been revealed that 9-1-1: Nashville will also star Jessica Capshaw (Grey’s Anatomy). Details about the plot of the new show have not yet been revealed, and it’s not clear who O’Donnell and Capshaw will be playing.
The TV world is buzzing with excitement! Chris O’Donnell, best known for his long-running role on NCIS: Los Angeles, is stepping into new territory with an upcoming 9-1-1 spinoff—and he’s not coming alone. In a twist that has fans of both Grey’s Anatomy and the 9-1-1 universe losing their minds, a beloved Grey’s alum is joining the cast as a series regular. Let’s break it all down and see why this might just be the next big thing in TV drama.
What is known is that, as the title would suggest, the series will focus on first responders working in the famous Tennessee city. Capshaw has experience at ABC as an alum of the hit medical drama series Grey’s Anatomy. She memorably played the role of Dr. Arizona Robbins, a role that spanned from Season 5 through Season 14; she later made a guest appearance in Season 20. Additionally, Capshaw starred in two seasons of the ABC drama series The Practice. Her other TV credits include ER, Odd Man Out, Bones, and Tell Me Lies, and she has appeared in films like The Groomsmen, Holidate, and Dear Zoe.
The 9-1-1 Franchise Expands After the First Spinoff Series Ended
The original 9-1-1 series is ongoing, but the first spinoff, 9-1-1: Lone Star, recently wrapped up its run after five seasons. 9-1-1 initially debuted on Fox in 2018 before later moving to ABC in 2024, starting with Season 7. The show is now in Season 8. 9-1-1: Nashville will serve as the second offshoot for 9-1-1. It is written by Ryan Murphy, Tim Minear, and Rashad Raisani, and all three serve as executive producers on the project alongside O’Donnell, Falchuk, and 9-1-1 star Angela Bassett. 20th Television is the producing studio.
On having a crossover with 9-1-1: Nashville, Bassett recently told TV Insider, “We have to see how we do this interstate, how are we gonna play this, what business I have over there? But we’ll see if the FBI comes into play, if somebody runs from California to Nashville or vice versa, but yeah, you definitely could have some crossover action going on.”Rashad also teased about the vibe of the new spinoff to the outlet, “It will still hopefully feel like our DNA, but in the same way that Lone Star was different than 9-1-1 and had its own feel, I think that if we can get this right, this will have its own feel.”
“[9-1-1: Lone Star was] not trying to be the same show as 9-1-1, just like Nashville is not going to try to be Lone Star,” Minear also told Entertainment Weekly. “It was tough to say goodbye to those characters [on Lone Star]. I loved that cast. I loved those characters.” This 9-1-1 spinoff is more than just another drama—it’s a collision of two powerhouse TV worlds. With Chris O’Donnell’s leadership and a beloved Grey’s Anatomy alum on board, fans can expect explosive action, raw emotion, and unforgettable characters. The casting is bold. The story sounds compelling. And the hype? Totally justified.
