Star Wars boasts an array of ongoing projects, and recent news revealed Dave Filoni’s appointment as the chief creative officer of Lucasfilm Studio. This signifies a more active role in the creative development of projects, generating considerable excitement among fans.
Amidst the diverse projects, ranging from Mangold’s ancient Star Wars film to Waititi’s enigmatic venture set to challenge fans, a Rey-centric movie is in the works. Unveiled at Star Wars Celebration 2023, the film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy explores Rey’s post-‘The Rise of Skywalker’ journey to rebuild the Jedi Order. Originally penned by Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, the script transitioned to Steven Knight. Set 15 years after ‘Rise of Skywalker,’ the narrative delves into the post-war, post-First Order galaxy, portraying a Jedi Order in disarray. Kathleen Kennedy elucidated that Rey is dedicated to honoring her pledge to Luke and reconstructing the Jedi Order based on ancient texts.
In a statement to Collider, Daisy Ridley remarked on her film, revealing that she initially thought she wouldn’t be involved in more projects. However, she was later approached with a proposal, and the movie turned out to be entirely different from her expectations.
No, I’m not doing another one. Then it all happened after I came back. It was such a nice reception. I was shitting myself before I went on stage, because no one knew I was going to that. No one knew I was going to Celebration, bar like Kathy [Kennedy] and there were a couple of people. I was so nervous. Oh my God. It was such a wonderful reception. I’m very excited. The story is really cool. I’m waiting to read a script because, obviously, I don’t have any other updates. It’s not what I expected, but I’m very excited.
She couldn’t confirm if there’s a solitary film centered around her in development or an entire trilogy.
I know the storyline for one film. That’s not to say that that’s all it is, but that’s what I was told about. And I imagine it will be the next film, I think. I mean, again, I don’t know, post strikes and everything, how quickly everything will start up again. But yes, so far, I know the story of one film, and I think people will be very excited.
Rian Johnson’s planned Star Wars trilogy featuring new characters was initially in development but is currently on hold. Consequently, the content of Ridley’s new movie remains uncertain.
It’s worth noting that ‘The Last Jedi’ and ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ faced criticism from fans, particularly concerning the rapid development of Ridley’s character, Rey, without a clear explanation. Disappointment also stemmed from revelations about her lineage. Fans hope the upcoming movie takes a different approach to do justice to both Rey and Ridley.
