Why Didn’t New Episodes of NCIS and NCIS: ORIGINS Air This Week?

NCIS and NCIS: ORIGINS didn’t air new episodes this week, leaving many fans worried about potential cancellations. However, there was a good reason for the pause in programming.

“This season, our new and returning series continue to showcase CBS as the leader in launching and programming the biggest hits with mass appeal for broadcast and streaming viewers,” Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment, said in a statement announcing the renewals of several shows, including NCIS and NCIS: ORIGINS.

Reisenbach explained that the returning shows “represent a mix of long-standing hits and a new generation of fan favorites,” adding that the network looks forward “to delivering another successful season.”

While the shows aren’t being canceled, some fans were thrown by the fact that NCIS and NCIS: ORIGINS were put on hold this week. The reason? The men’s NCAA basketball championship.

So, not to worry — new episodes will start back April 14.

The season finale of NCIS is a month away, but star Diona Reasonover, who plays forensics scientist Kasie Hines, shared some details with TV Insider.

“Team dynamics are going to be challenged because we may not have the leadership that we’re used to,” she shared, adding, “I know the fans have really been kind of craving a little bit more long-form storytelling. You’re going to get it. This season ends with some of those longer story arcs that you have been hoping for, so we’re going to satisfy a lot of people, I think.”

NCIS: ORIGINS actress Tyla Abercrumbie also teased her show’s season finale in an interview with TV Line.

“You’re going to feel good,” she said. “You’re going to feel good because you will be like, ‘I had 18 episodes of a show that I thought I was going to know [how it goes], and it turns out I don’t know anything.’ That’s how you’re going to feel. And as a TV watcher myself, there’s nothing like leaning into something and going, ‘I’m so glad this show is on.’”

NCIS: ORIGINS co-showrunner Gina Lucita Monreal recently spoke to ScreenRant about the pressures of creating a prequel to the iconic show.

“We really made a point to create a show for both our fans, which we adore and are so grateful for, but also for new viewers,” Monreal explained. “So, we really tried to strike a balance between those two groups of people so that you don’t have to have seen any episodes of the mothership NCIS to understand and invest in ORIGINS. But at the same time, we remain true to canon and try to give those Easter eggs to our existing fans as well.”

After this small interruption in NCIS and NCIS: ORIGINS’ schedules, fans are doubly excited to see what’s in store for their favorite characters this season.
