It’s been a while since Station 19 finished up its second season. But the US drama is finally about to return in an epic TV crossover event with Grey’s Anatomy.
Station 19 has swapped places with its older sibling Grey’s, premiering its third season at 8pm ahead of the medical drama’s mid-season return at 9pm.
This means the fallout of the shocking Grey’s Anatomy mid-season finale, which saw a car come crashing into Joe’s Bar, will play out first on Station 19 with the first responders rallying to save those trapped inside.
And it’s personal for both the firefighters and the doctors of Grey Sloan Memorial, with Grey’s favourites Jackson, Levi, Nico, Helm, Casey and Blake and Station 19’s Pruitt and Ben all in the bar when the accident happened.
Jesse Williams, who plays Jackson Avery describes the TV event as “scary as hell and startling”, while Barrett Doss, who plays Vic Hughes, says “everybody is in it together. The stakes are super high and they all have to use all of their skills to solve this problem.”
Showrunner Krista Vernoff says the timeslot switch will mean the storylines will be more “organic” and the later time of Grey’s will allow it to be a “sexier” show.
“We always thought the better progression was from firefighters to the hospital,” Vernoff says. “There are very organic opportunities for Grey’s to, for example, inherit patients we see rescued on Station 19.”
So in the Station 19 season 3 opener, the bar disaster will pick up with the remaining firefighters desperately trying to save their fellow crewmates Ben and Pruitt as well as the Grey Sloan doctors and bar patrons.
Then in the Grey’s Anatomy season 16 premiere, the action will shift to the doctors as they try to save those the Station 19 crew have rescued from the wreckage.

Station 19 season 3 premieres Friday 24 January at 8pm, with the Grey’s Anatomy season 16 mid-season premiere right after at 9pm.
