Although Ghosts season 4, episode 17 ended with the problem resolved, I still wish the sitcom would stop falling back on one repetitive story beat with Jay’s character. The ghosts of CBS’s Ghosts might be the show’s main focus, but the CBS sitcom’s human characters also have their moments. Rose McIver’s Sam is the only living human who can see and speak to ghosts, but she is also a compelling sitcom heroine in her own right, thanks to her quirky personality and absurd antics.
Her husband, Utkarsh Ambudkar’s Jay, has a more frustrating role in Ghosts. Jay has a lot of potential and some outings, like season 4, episode 9, “A Very Arondekar Christmas Part 2,” highlight this. However, many of the show’s episodes use Jay as little more than a prop in storylines centered on the ghosts. Ghosts season 4 made even Alberta’s ghost power matter, despite how unimpressive her ability to be heard humming by the living initially seemed. It seems reasonable to expect the sitcom to be just as invested in making Jay’s story engaging, but this isn’t the case.
Jay Accidentally Ruins Another Plan In Ghosts Season 4 Episode 17
Jay Revealed Shiki Liked Sass Despite The Ghosts and Sam’s Shared Plan
In season 4, episode 17, “His Girl Shiki,” Jay accidentally ruined another plan shared by Sam and the ghosts because he was only partially aware of the gambit. Pete introduced Sass to a beautiful, charismatic potential love interest named Joan, a screenwriter from the Golden Age of Hollywood who could visit the Woodstone Mansion whenever she wanted. Although the pair hit it off, Sass soon realized he was still too hung up on his unrequited crush Shiki to focus on someone else.
Pete promised to visit Shiki and see if she was interested in Sass, but this only complicated the situation. Shiki revealed she was interested in Sass when she learned that he had left a hunted deer at her door, but Pete, Sam, and the rest of the ghosts decided it wasn’t worth sharing this information with Sass since he could never be with her. While Isaac’s Ghosts season 4 love life seemed like the most frustrating near-miss in the sitcom’s history of misunderstandings, “His Girl Shiki” went one step further.
Jay’s misfortune did unintentionally improve Sass’s plot as “His Girl Shiki” ended with a love triangle, which naturally has more dramatic potential than Sass simply ending up with Joan.
Sass learned about the deception just as he was about to hook up with Joan when Jay walked into the room and announced that Shiki liked him. Sam’s husband was privy to this news, but not to the conversation where the ghosts and Sam decided not to tell Sass. Jay’s misfortune did unintentionally improve Sass’s plot as “His Girl Shiki” ended with a love triangle, which naturally has more dramatic potential than Sass simply ending up with Joan. However, it was still frustrating to see the sweet Jay once again reduced to a walking, talking plot device.
Ghosts Cannot Continue To Use Jay As A Plot Device
Ghosts Season 4 Episode 17 Highlights Jay’s Biggest Character Problem
Although Sass’s Ghosts season 4 romance is the most recent case of this, Jay has been used as a plot device throughout the sitcom thanks to his inability to see the ghosts. Sam’s love interest mostly exists to disrupt plots that involve ghost characters, almost always unintentionally. In season 4, episode 15, “The Bachelorette Party,” Trevor’s decision to bribe a restaurant critic reviewing Jay’s restaurant was massively complicated by Jay’s inability to directly confront the ghost.
In episode 3, “Halloween 4: The Witch,” Jay ended up parting with a beloved piece of memorabilia when the ghosts convinced him that Patience had turned Sam into a statue, only for this to be a misunderstanding. Episode 6, “The Primary Source,” at least saw Sam be the one to ruin a plan when she announced her intention to forge a primary source for Isaac’s book, only to realize she was speaking to a living assessor and not a cholera ghost from the basement. However, the majority of mistakes like this still come from Jay.
Jay Accidentally Ruining Plans Isn’t Entirely His Fault
Jay’s Misfortunes Are Partially Caused By Sam Leaving Him Out Of The Loop
Although this miscommunication made more sense in earlier seasons, Jay unintentionally ruining the best-laid plans of the ghosts doesn’t really add up anymore. Sam should be more conscious of making sure her husband is included in schemes by now, particularly when Jay already knows all the ghosts and their particular personality traits. Since Trevor’s Ghosts season 4 story saw Jay take his place at a work retreat, it is fair to suggest that he knows enough to be kept in the loop about the minutiae of ghost plans.
There is a possibility of Jay screwing up a scheme even though he knows the plan but, as the only one who can’t speak to the ghosts, he is at a unique disadvantage.
This might be a lot of effort on Sam’s part, but it is frustrating and repetitive to see Jay accidentally ruin plans through no fault of his own when he isn’t in the loop. There is always a possibility of Jay accidentally screwing up a scheme even though he knows the plan but, as the only one who can’t speak to the ghosts, he is at a unique disadvantage that Ghosts season 4 exploits too often.
