Gordon Ramsay praises Phoenix teen’s viral cooking video: ‘Dude, well done’
After a Phoenix boy posted a TikTok making beef Wellington, a dish where beef is wrapped in dough and then baked, he never expected a response from renowned celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay.
William Mwungeri, 14, has been posting cooking videos for the past six months to his various social accounts named “Cooking with William,” according to TODAY.com, but has been cooking regularly since he was around 11. The video he posted on March 20 making beef Wellington was his first time trying to get Ramsey’s attention, he said.
The original TikTok Mwungeri post has garnered over nine million views, and Ramsay’s duet alone has received over 20 million. Ramsay appeared visibly impressed by Mwungeri’s mastery of the dish and invited him to Hell’s Kitchen, Ramsay’s fine-dining restaurant chain, where beef Wellington is a staple menu item.
In Ramsay’s duet, posted on April 3, he compliments the boy for his execution of the tedious steps.
“Dude, you are handling this recipe with such confidence, well done,” Ramsay says in his response, later adding that he was not cooking at this skill level when he was Mwungeri’s age.
Ramsay also praised Mwungeri’s inclusion of chestnut mushrooms, which he deemed the “best flavor for a Wellington.”
Mwungeri told TODAY.com that it’s his dream to be on “MasterChef Junior,” Ramsay’s hit show where kid chefs take on cooking challenges.
In response to Ramsay, Mwungeri posted a video of him holding two pieces of bread near his head as the restaurateur’s video played out. “I guess I’m not an idiot sandwich,” he said at the end of the video.
