After a long wait, Ghosts finally reveals Hetty’s powers, and it isn’t lost on me that it makes up for her life’s biggest heartbreak. Similar to its UK counterpart, the spirits in the Woodstone Mansion are given their respective abilities. While some have long known theirs, such as Trevor being able to physically touch things if he fully concentrates and Thor playing with electricity, others have had to wait to discover theirs. Hetty, for example, has had to wait a long time to discover her powers, to the point that the other spirits stopped discussing theirs in front of her.
The hierarchy of the powers of the Woodstone Mansion ghosts changes from time to time. While Flower’s capability to inflict the feeling of being high or Isaac giving a foul odor when walking through a living aren’t technically cool, they serve their own purpose from time to time. Objectively, however, Pete’s ability to travel beyond the invisible limit of the mansion’s grounds and Sass’ ability to enter people’s dreams are the show’s best ones. However, Hetty’s newly discovered ability is arguably not only enviable, it also has a deeper meaning that relates to the life she lived.
Hetty’s Power In Ghosts Is Officially Revealed
Once Every Year, Hetty Can Be Seen By The Living
In Ghost season 4, episode 16, “Hetty’s Day,” the lady of Woodstone Mansion finally gets her powers — Hetty can be seen by living people once a year during St. Patrick’s Day. This capability comes as a surprise for both Jay and his visiting cousin, Sunil, although Sam and the rest of the spirits are still baffled about the specifics of the matter. Ultimately, they deduce that it may have something to do with Hetty acknowledging her Irish ancestry — something that she only found out about earlier this season. Currently, her power only manifests during St. Patrick’s Day.
Being Seen As Her Ghost Power Is Hetty’s Retribution After Being Neglected All Her Life
Hetty’s Power Is The Perfect One For Her
Hetty’s ghost powers are very limited. Unlike all the other spirits in the show who can use their special abilities whenever they want to, she can only be seen once every year. However, that doesn’t matter, but just the idea of being seen should be thrilling for someone who spent her whole life neglected. As revealed in Ghosts, Hetty was raised by a neglectful father, after her mother was taken into an asylum. She then married Elias, who was not only despicable as a living person, but also in death. Even her relationship with her son left her feeling invisible.
Sam and the rest of the spirits at Woodstone mansion seeing and interacting with Hetty has been going on for years now. However, that’s arguably nothing to the joy of being suddenly perceived by other living people. Sunil giving her the unexpected attention in Ghosts season 4, episode 16 is an irreplaceable gift after being stuck in a loveless marriage with a despicable man. It’s likely that she will find ways to use her new powers to wreak some havoc, but as it is, Hetty finally being perceived is the perfect special power for her.
