Tim Allen achieved sitcom success for the third time this year with his new ABC comedy Shifting Gears. Indeed, the finale of season one aired on Wednesday night.
Despite Shifting Gears being a huge success in the ratings, however, the sitcom has yet to be renewed for a second season. Now, Allen’s Shifting Gears co-star Kat Dennings is speaking out to reveal her anxiety about this.
‘We’re All On Pins And Needles’
“No, we haven’t [heard anything]. Of course, we’re all on pins and needles about it, but hopefully we will,” Dennings told Collider. “You just never know with TV, but we’ve gotten such great numbers and I’ve heard that people are happy. So who knows? I’m a very negative person, so I never expect anything to happen.”
Season one of Shifting Gears revolved around Dennings’ character of Riley moving in with her father, Allen’s character of Matt. Even if the show continues for multiple seasons, Dennings wants it to be known that she’s open to Riley continuing to live with her father for many years to come.
“I think the beauty of this is that I can conceive it”, Dennings explained. “She might end up there for five seasons or maybe in Season 3 she does move out. Who knows though? There’s also her brother, Sam, who we’ve never seen before. He’s in the military, who will come in, hopefully, in future seasons.”
Sean William Scott Weighs In
Season one ended on a cliffhanger on Wednesday night. Indeed, Seann William Scott’s character of Gabriel ended up professing his love for Dennings’ Riley. Scott is just as eager for Shifting Gears to come back for a second season as Dennings is.
“I just hope there’s a next season,” Scott told People Magazine. “I don’t care what we do … I just want to play around again.”
“I agree. I second that,” Dennings chimed back in to add.
Allen Loves Doing Shifting Gears
While Allen has yet to speak out publicly about a potential second season of Shifting Gears, he’s made it clear that he’s loved filming this show. This is his third hit sitcom. Allen previously starred on Home Improvement from 1991 until 1999. He then starred on Last Man Standing from 2011 until 2021.
“Somebody I was talking to called me the Tom Brady of TV with those three sitcoms, and I hadn’t thought of that but it got in my head,” Allen recently told USA Today.
Even after all these years, Allen is still in love with the sitcom format. One of his favorite things about Shifting Gears is getting to shoot the show old-school style in front of a live studio audience.
“Back in the day, this is how it was, you rehearsed it and shot it in front of real people, and I love that,” Allen explained. “In the movies, OK maybe I make the crew bust up, but that’s it. Doing Shifting Gears, I get to aim for the whole audience plus the crew. There’s nothing like it.”
There are few shows on television that are as funny as Shifting Gears is these days. We can only hope that it comes back for a second season, as we aren’t ready for it to be over yet!
