Ahead of tonight’s season 1 finale of Shifting Gears, which airs 8/7c on ABC, Kat Dennings and Seann William Scott spoke with PEOPLE about working with their co-star Tim Allen.
Dennings: “I have learned through experience that you just never really know how someone’s going to be, especially when they have such a long-running career. Sometimes they’re exactly what you think, sometimes they’re the complete opposite.”
As one would hope, Allen was described by a “happily surprised” Dennings as “kind” and “welcoming” to those on set. “He has the funny bone of a 9-year-old boy,” she added.
This isn’t the first time she’s praised Allen, previously telling TV Insider, “Tim’s a really amazing actor, and I’ve told him this to his face, so I’m definitely happy to say it in print!”
As for Allen, he’s said that the former 2 Broke Girls star is “so freaking talented.” You might not realize, but the two were actually born on the same day.
“Shifting Gears” follows Matt, the stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. When his estranged daughter, Riley, and her kids move into his house, the real restoration begins.
Scott shared with PEOPLE that Allen actually reminds him of his late father: “My dad passed away a while ago, you know, but even one of my brothers who loves the show sent me a text. He’s like, ‘Tim really reminds me of dad,’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, you know, it’s true. He does.'” He then continues to describe him as “just funny and always cracking jokes.”
Allen explained, “I’ve done a full circle. I look around and I’m on the Disney lot, and I keep walking by the Home Improvement set, which is over that way. I sat in front of the set and they still have a sign on it: Home Improvement. I’m kind of finishing, if you will, where I started.”
Both Dennings and Scott were sure to express their desire to come back for another season.
