The cast of Dexter: Resurrection continues to grow. This time, a fan favorite actor from The Sopranos is being brought into the mix.
Per Variety, actor Steve Schirripa, best known for playing Bobby “Bacala” Bacccalieri on The Sopranos, has joined the cast of Dexter: Resurrection. Schirripa will be playing the role of Vinny, a “greedy slumlord” who will be a recurring character. The news comes after the series started production in January ahead of its planned launch on Paramount+ with Showtime this summer.
Schirripa is well known for The Sopranos, though he recently starred on the hit CBS series Blue Bloods with his role as Detective Anthony Abetemarco. He also starred in the ABC Family series The Secret Life of the American Teenager as Leo Boykewich. The actor’s film work includes Detroit Rock City, Kill the Irishman, and Under the Boardwalk.
Steve Schirripa Will Have a Recurring Role on Dexter: Resurrection
Several other franchise newcomers have been announced for Dexter: Resurrection. The series will also introduce Uma Thurman (Kill Bill), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family), and Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother). Returning stars include Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan, James Remar as Harry Morgan, David Zayas as Detective Angel Batista, and Jack Alcott as Harrison Morgan.
Dexter: Resurrection will be the second sequel series for Dexter and one of several offshoots. The first sequel series, Dexter: New Blood, seemingly killed off Hall’s Dexter at the end. However, the prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, revealed that the serial killer vigilante actually survived. That sets up the events for Dexter: Resurrection. Additionally, another prequel series following John Lithgow’s Trinity Killer is currently in development.
“When I wrote that [New Blood] finale — which was the most watched single episode in the history of Showtime, by the way — the internet went insane over it,” creator Clyde Phillips told THR about the decision to kill off Dexter, and why that was reversed. “Because they loved Dexter so much, and they love Michael Hall so much. I wanted to take out ads at the time that said: ‘I only had Michael Hall for one year.’ Back when we did New Blood, I only had him for one year. I didn’t want him going off to prison or disappearing into the fog or any of that business [in the finale], so I decided to be bold about it. The internet hated it.”
On retconning the character’s death for Dexter: Resurrection, he added, “Michael came back to me and said, ‘You know what, Dexter’s in my bones; Dexter’s in your bones, Clyde. Let’s keep going. Can you figure out a way to make it happen?’ And I did.”
