Bridgerton Might’ve Secretly Revealed Its Queen Charlotte Prequel Story
Queen Charlotte is getting her own prequel series and Bridgerton season 2 might have already set up one of the spinoff’s primary storylines.
Bridgerton season 2 might have secretly revealed its Queen Charlotte prequel story. While Bridgerton’s focus is on the title family and their respective love stories, Queen Charlotte has played a crucial role in each season of the show thus far. She schemed and attempted to discover the identity of Lady Whistledown, who she sees as direct competition. Now, Queen Charlotte is getting a prequel series of her own.
The Bridgerton prequel series will center a younger Queen Charlotte in her early days as the monarch, as well as on the younger versions of Lady Violet Bridgerton and Lady Danbury. In the present, the three women are often busy throwing balls, dinner parties, and ensuring the youth, specifically the Bridgertons, find their marital matches before the ton’s social season is over. However, a limited series focused on Queen Charlotte decades before Bridgerton starts is intriguing in a number of ways — specifically, because Charlotte is the only character in the series who is based on a real person. A prequel could help audiences understand more about her early life, her romance with King George III, and the beginning of her relationship with the members of the ton.
In season 2, Queen Charlotte seemed to be personally offended by Lady Mary Sharma’s departure from London. Perhaps the queen was the one to set up Mary’s initial match, giving her blessing for the union before Mary fell in love with her husband and married him without the approval of the Sheffields or Queen Charlotte. This tension-filled dynamic between Mary and Queen Charlotte could be the main crux of the Bridgerton prequel series. It would certainly work considering that the characters are already known to fans, with an expansion of both of their backstories and how Mary came to be on the bad side of the queen to begin with. What’s more, Lady Danbury was clearly involved with what happened somehow, having also known Mary in her youth. The prequel series could expand on that particular narrative, bringing all four women (including Violet) into each other’s orbit.
Bridgerton season 2 introduced Lady Mary and laid out her backstory, which included being shunned by her parents with zero financial support, but there is a lot more to explore beyond that. She likely hurt a lot and considering she angered her parents and Queen Charlotte for marrying below her station, telling the story of a young Mary and her conflict with the crown would be interesting, offering another side to her character and to the relationship she may have had with Queen Charlotte. Fans know how easily it can be to get on Queen Charlotte’s bad side, and it’s possible the Bridgerton prequel series will reveal she and Mary might have been closer like the way she is with Lady Danbury.
While there is little known so far about the Bridgerton prequel series besides the fact that it will focus on Queen Charlotte, Lady Danbury, and the Bridgerton matriarch’s youth, there is a lot of potential to include other characters who have been introduced throughout the first two seasons of Bridgerton as well. And considering there is still so much to learn about Lady Mary and why she fell out with the queen, as well as her friendship with Lady Danbury, the Bridgerton prequel series could certainly start there and grow from there.
