Nathan Fillion had to endure one thing in The Rookie that no real-life cop should. And no, it’s not the action — it’s something much worse.
Imagine spending your whole workday in a ‘certain type’ of clothes — something that just screams uncomfortable. That’s basically what Fillion had to endure in every single episode.
Nathan Fillion’s biggest struggle on The Rookie? That wool uniform was pure torture
Nathan Fillion had to endure one major inconvenience while playing a cop on The Rookie, and real-life officers would agree it’s just plain cruel. Turns out, the LAPD uniform is made of wool. Yes, even under the blazing California sun.
During his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Fillion spilled on how impractical the uniform was. He admitted, pointing out that the fabric didn’t offer any real protection:
Because the uniform is wool. It’s mean and impractical. It’s not like it’s bulletproof. And it’s 113 degrees in the shade, and we’re out there in wool.
But the discomfort didn’t stop there. The actor revealed that carrying the heavy-duty belt, loaded with cop gear, left a permanent mark. He shared,
I used to have a bruise here on my hip because of the gun, now it’s a callous. If you don’t shift them down, you think, oh my gosh, there’s something wrong. Sometimes you have to lean down. It will pinch a nerve, and your leg goes dead.
And if that wasn’t enough? Sometimes the weight pinched a nerve, making his leg go numb.
Despite the hardships, Fillion embraced his role as LAPD’s oldest rookie. He recalled filming the pilot episode, which shut down Hollywood Boulevard for an epic street scene.
Dressed in full uniform, he even got mistaken for a real officer. A passerby once asked for legal advice — because, apparently, if you look like a cop, you must be one.
