Bridgerton: 8 Scenes That Made Fans Feel Bad For Queen Charlotte
While the primary focus of Netflix’s Bridgerton is on the Bridgerton family, fans can’t help but feel bad for Queen Charlott who seemed unfulfilled.
Last year, Netflix announced Shondaland was creating a Bridgerton spinoff detailing Queen Charlotte’s youth and rise to fame in London. Golda Rosheuvel signed on to be the adult Queen Charlotte while other actresses portray Charlotte in her younger years.
As love-stricken as Bridgerton is, there’s depth to Queen Charlotte that hasn’t been dissected in the series because of the show’s focus on the Bridgerton family. In the few scenes that fans saw of Charlotte’s personal life, they were filled with sadness and unfulfillment than the stereotypical lavish, royal life. Between heartbreak with her husband, King George, and being embarrassed publicly, Queen Charlotte had some rather emotional scenes throughout Bridgerton’s two seasons.
The Moment Edwina Calmed The King Down When The Queen Was At A Loss
Due to King George’s deteriorating mind, the queen spent most of her time by herself or with her right-hand man, Brimsley. In season 2, King George wasn’t seen much but he did make a quick appearance at Edwina and Anthony’s wedding — or lack thereof.
Her Private Dinner With George In Season 1 That Ended In Heartbreak
In season 1, Charlotte greeted George properly while he was eating dinner. He adorably called her a pet name, “Lottie,” and told her to sit beside him. Charlotte seemed thrilled that George was in an upbeat mood and remembered her nickname, along with some memories in the garden.
Her Reliance On Being Entertained
“I wish to be entertained!” was one of Queen Charlotte’s more memorable quotes in the Bridgerton. As a queen whose husband was too ill to be at public events, she lived a very quiet life when no events were going on.
The Embarrassment Of The Bridgerton Wedding (And Possibly Choosing The Wrong Diamond)
Aside from being close with Lady Danbury and the Bridgertons, it seemed like the queen wanted to host the Bridgerton-Sharma wedding because it gave her something to do. She’d have the tons on her grounds, have the best food, and have the wedding of the year.
When Daphne Declined Her Nephew’s Hand In Marriage
In season 1, Charlotte declared Daphne that season’s Diamond. She was incomparable to the other women and considered her the most worthy of a strong suitor. Daphne and the Duke had a strong connection but knew they’d never work because the Duke wasn’t ready for marriage or kids.
The Death Of Her Daughter Amelia
King George and Queen Charlotte were modeled after the real King George III and Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Although it wasn’t divided in Bridgerton’s first two seasons the couple went on to have 15 children together.
Sadly, their daughter Amelia didn’t survive after dying from tuberculosis at a young age, according to the Royal Collection Trust. It was said Amelia was the king’s favorite daughter and he was beside himself when they lost her. During season 1’s dinner table fiasco, George lost his temper once Charlotte reminded him that she died. In season 3, fans are hoping to see more of the couple’s adult children.
Her Obsession With Lady Whistledown Is Deeper Than The Surface
While some thought the queen’s obsession with Lady Whistledown was surface level, it’s much deeper than that. Queen Charlotte didn’t just read Whistledown because she enjoyed gossip, she read it because she worried Lady Whistledown would expose her own family secrets.
From her husband’s illness to her voice like queen, Charlotte didn’t want her own stories shared in the paper. After reading Lady Whistledown from cover to cover, that’s when the queen loosened up and enjoyed being entertained by rumors that didn’t involve her.
…And Her Need To Find Lady Whistledown Was For Her Own Protection
Throughout all seasons, Queen Charlotte did her best to find the identity of Lady Whistledown. How could one person know so much about the tone? The scandals that Lady Whistledown broke were so shocking that Charlotte feared she was next.
Catching Whistledown was her only way of making sure her secrets wouldn’t be revealed. More than that, Charlotte didn’t want Whistledown to expose the fact that she didn’t have as much power as others thought. With her son being a prince, he took charge of all matters of state while Charlotte’s role was more social. Having people undermine her decision-making would have been bad for the royal family.
