It’s not just the characters in Tim Allen’s sitcom Shifting Gears that are settling into their new family dynamic. The set featured in the ABC show has also gone through a few changes.
Speaking to IndieWire, production designer Stephan Olson explained that changes to the Parker’s living room have been very intentional, since any home would evolve when new and returning family members take up residence. “There’s a growth curve,” he said. “It’s just a huge learning process for the characters [and] what the house is like. The house changes with these new characters in it.”
When the series begins, Matt (Allen) is living alone following the death of his wife and hasn’t altered the décor. “That is one of the things we talked about, that he would not have changed anything,” Olson continued. “They had sort of a minimal lifestyle. They were empty nesters. And that was a conscious choice on everybody’s part, to not have that sitcom clutter. We had to do some convincing because I think the network sometimes would like to see it look more comfortable and more inviting, and Tim’s answer to that was, ‘The kids [characters] are gonna bring that.’“
Depth Is Used To Give Any Set A Warmer Feel
Olson used depth to give Matt’s house a warmer feeling. The study is visible from the living room and there is a media room off the kitchen. “That was an early idea that I pitched, and it kind of went away for a while during the process,” he said about the design. “Then we were walking on the sets, and we’re like, ‘Boy, it would really be nice to have that [extra depth].’ So we built it back again. The directors like to play the depth. It gives them the chance for a lot of movement.”
Shifting Gears hails from the creative minds of Julie Thacker Scully and Mike Scully. “The story follows Matt Parker, the stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop,” the official synopsis reads. “When his estranged daughter Riley (Kat Dennings) and her teenage kids move into his house, the real restoration begins.” The cast also includes Daryl Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins, Barrett Margolis, Sean William Scott, and Jenna Elfman as Eve Drake.
Although the series received mixed reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, it recently set a major viewership record for ABC. In the first seven days following the show’s premiere on network television on Jan. 8, the premiere episode attracted almost 17 million viewers across ABC, Hulu, Hulu on Disney+, and digital platforms. The first episode of Shifting Gears initially debuted with a strong same-day audience of 6.2 million. However, its multi-platform viewership saw those numbers rise by 173% in one week.
