TVLine released a new preview for Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage that includes Georgie (Montana Jordan) hugging his deceased dad, George Cooper Sr., who is mysteriously alive (images below). Further context is teased at the start, with Georgie tossing and turning in bed while sleeping, before cutting to a dream-like sequence featuring his father. Fortunately, this is not the case of a sequel series retconning the events of the original. Some fans joked that he might have faked his death before Young Sheldon first aired, but after his emotional exit in Season 7, it seems Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage will be honoring it while allowing the fan-favorite character to return in a meaningful capacity.
Fox’s early 2010s sitcom ‘Raising Hope’ deserves more love from a modern audience, and it’s perfect for ‘Georgie & Mandy’ fans.
Although his death in Young Sheldon was handled perfectly and set the stage for Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, fans of the franchise will likely welcome him back with open arms. This will be especially true if his return serves as a means to further the development of other characters. If it’s just for the sake of including fan-service through a cameo, without any subtext, then Barber’s reprisal of George would feel hollow. Fortunately, that does not seem to be the case.
So… Why Does George Cooper Sr. Return in ‘Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage’
“His dad visits him in a dream. George is thinking about his dad, and he’s worried that his dad might be disappointed in him…. [The idea] came out of a conversation we’d had with Chuck, even early on, talking about the show. Chuck had said about his own father that he still dreams about him, he still visits him, so that was a thing we had thought about. And then when we were breaking this episode, it just seemed like a great opportunity to bring George back.”
Of course, the return of George Cooper also opens up the door for all kinds of future appearances. After all, George Cooper Sr. is not only an important character for the prequel shows, but for The Big Bang Theory, too. The turning point of Sheldon Cooper’s entire childhood was the death of his father. Could Barber reprise his role in another episode, this time interacting with Sheldon? Whatever the case may be, the main priority should always be the character’s development, and if it feels like a natural progression of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.
