The nightmare isn’t over for Athena (Angela Bassett) as she returns to Los Angeles on September 1. And she doesn’t even want to bring her fiancé’s (Glenn Plummer) killer back in the first place as part of a deal to find others involved in the sex trafficking ring!
At the end of the Season 8 premiere, the bee-nado incident dealt a devastating blow to Athena’s plane: Those buzzing insects caused a smaller plane to collide with the one she was on in midair. The second episode details the events that follow: Athena contacts 1-9 and is connected to air traffic control, 118 helps passengers treat each other’s injuries over the phone, Athena has to turn around and prepare to land the plane, Bobby (Peter Krause) can’t be reached because his phone is turned off on the set of the TV show he’s a technical advisor for and Buck (Oliver Stark) comes to warn him, and the pilot has a heart attack shortly after waking up.
So, as the promo for “Final Approach” shows, Athena is once again in charge of the emergency landing. “What do you need from me?” Bobby asks. “Do you have a runway in your back pocket?” she asks. Well, he may not, but 118 can shut down 110 and clear the space. It has to be done quickly, though, with more emergencies (fires!) on board.

The synopsis for “Final Approach” doesn’t give much away, reading, “Athena’s only chance to survive and save everyone on the flight is to try to land the plane before it crashes and call 911 for help.”
“In a lot of ways, the bees are a setup for a much bigger, more epic emergency, and I really liked the bees in the first episode. I like when the show isn’t afraid to be a little bit ridiculous. We’re making an entertaining show, so I like to lean into that. And then it allows us to go into something really epic and dramatic,” Stark told TV Insider. “I think this batch of episodes – obviously the cruise ship was great last year – is probably some of the best opening episodes we’ve had in a good few seasons. So I’m really, really excited about it. And I know we say this every year, but I really mean it this year: I think it’s just got bigger and better.”
