FBI: International Ends With Unanswered Questions After Cancellation

Television shows get canceled unexpectedly all the time. Sure, sometimes shows come to an end after spending many successful seasons dominating the ratings. This is what happened with shows like Friends and The Big Bang Theory. When those shows start to lose viewership, networks sometimes jump ship. Other times, there are shows that get canceled so abruptly that viewers almost feel like things don’t get a chance to be wrapped up properly.

In the case of FBI: International, their position might lie somewhere in the middle. The show’s cancellation was announced during the fourth season. However, production on the series had not yet wrapped. This gave the team behind FBI: International plenty of time to do the show justice in its final episode. Yet, fans were shocked and angry when they discovered that’s not what they did.

FBI: International Ends The Series On A Cliffhanger, Causing Frustration Among Many Fans

The CBS show FBI: International just came to an end after four seasons and fans aren’t happy with the series finale. The episode, which aired on May 20, ended on a cliffhanger. What made this frustrating for viewers was the fact that the series was canceled months before production was completed. Aside from being left with questions about the conclusion of the story, fans don’t feel satisfied with the ending of the series.

Jesse Lee Soffer was cast as Wesley “Wes” Mitchell for the show’s final season and fans voiced their frustration on X, believing the finale was all about himThe fans believed the finale should’ve brought the Fly Team back together. The finale did wrap up some storylines, but fans were still left wondering whether Vo or Raines got the GS-14 spot. The two are seen holding hands when they receive the call to inform them about who got the spot, but the viewers were left in the dark regarding the results\

  • One fan wrote, “As an episode to end that storyline – good. As a series finale – lackluster and wholly disappointing. Very little interaction between the Fly Team. So many unanswered questions. Just kinda sucked. What a slap in the face to the cast and loyal fans!”
  • Another viewer agreed, posting, “Well that was a slap in the face series finale for the fans. No team. No answers. Not even tank the dog. They had plenty of time to film a solid series finale but they chose to film an only Wes episode. “
  • “So, on top of canceling this great show, the series finale has deprived the fans of watching the entire fly team in action one last time,” an angry fan wrote. “F*** you CBS!”
  • Another upset audience member commented, “So…just like the entirety of the season, the series finale continued to be the Wes show. The rest of the team was sidelined, and we don’t even know who got the promotion between Cam and Andre. What a waste. “

When asked why this show and FBI: Most Wanted were canceled by the network, CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach told Deadline, “It’s not easy to end shows and we had a lot of options this year. The schedule is really full and so we always have to look at all of our shows, look at the aggregate information, the creative of where they are in their life cycle, what the finances look like, what the ratings are, and then we make those tough decisions.”

She continued, “We love working with Dick Wolf and we’re so excited to bring CIA onto the schedule. We have to be fiscally responsible and ultimately, those deals and the shows just weren’t penciling out for us from an economic perspective. But we want to be in the business with Dick. We’re excited to launch a new two-hour block next season.”

The FBI: International Cast React To The Series Being Canceled

When it was announced that FBI: International was canceled, the show’s star, Eva-Jane Willis, said in a statement to People that while she was “sad” to see the series go, she was appreciative to have had the opportunity. Eva-Jane also shared some words on Instagram, posting, “There are no words. So many fantastic friendships on screen and off. So many countries. So many adventures. Loved every minute. Thank you to all the people who worked their asses off and made this possible. Legends all.”

Vinessa Vidotto played the role of special agent Cameron Vo on the show. She had similar feelings about the experience. She shared a behind-the-scenes photo on Instagram, writing, “Thank you for watching our show and being invested … I needed this chapter, I’m filled with gratitude. And now it’s time to graduate and grow, again.”

Edwin Hodge portrayed Ray Cannon on Most Wanted and also shared photos from the set. “All good things must come to an end. I’m filled with so much abundance and appreciation for this prodigious cast and crew,” he wrote. Keisha Castle-Hughes posted a snap where she said farewell to Hana Gibson, the character she played. She also thanked Wolf Entertainment, CBS and the FBI franchise “for the journey” in a post on Instagram.

Jesse Lee Soffer Was Optimistic About FBI: International Before The Final Season Premiere

Jesse Lee Soffer’s run as Supervisory Special Agent Wesley “Wes” Mitchell in the final season of FBI: International saw him reuniting with Matt Olmstead, the writer and executive producer of the series. Matt was the co-creator of Chicago P.D., in which Jesse previously starred.

“There’s so much action, the first episode is great,” Jesse told Dealine on the heels of the season premiere. “When Matt and I first started talking about doing this, we discussed who this character was going to be. I love Matt’s writing, which was one of the biggest draws for me to do this. He delivered; that first episode was so much fun and it felt like a pilot.”

He continued, “When you meet Wes, he’s in this complicated relationship and he’s obviously married to his work. You’ll see his girlfriend throwing out his s*** because she thinks he’s cheating but he’s not. He’s just a hard worker but they get into this fight, and that’s how the episode starts. When he goes off afterward with his partner, who’s a close buddy, they get involved in a shooting when they’re chasing this robbery crew. But when his partner gets shot, Wes becomes a man on fire and chases these guys to Budapest. He reconnects with Cameron Vo (Vinessa Vidotto) there, with whom he has this whole backstory…The episode is packed with a lot of characters, backstories and a lot of action. It’s a great starting point for this new season of FBI: International and this new energy.”

Luke Kleintank previously starred as Scott Forrester in the first three seasons of the series. The character of Scott was written off in the Season 3 finale. The story goes that Scott had gone on the run with his mother to Alaska. The Fly Team fully welcomed Tank into the group and Raines adopted them. At the time, there was speculation that he might return to meet Wes.

“Wes meets Tank and Tank signs off on Wes,” Jesse told the outlet. “Everything is cool so hopefully that gets me some street cred with the fans. Trust me, I know Tank is the star of the show. We had a really cozy, cuddly scene in the second episode, so hopefully that will be a treat for the fans.”

During his time on the show’s final season, Jesse was joined by his friend Jay Hayden, who played the role of Agent Tyler Booth. Jesse gushed about being able to work with Jay.

“You have no idea how exciting it is. It’s so cool,” he said. “Jay is one of my best friends for over 15 years. We studied acting together, we taught together. We used to coach each other on auditions. We were both on TV at the same time, but I was in Chicago and he was in Los Angeles, so we hung out during hiatuses. It’s a dream come true that we get to work together on the same show. I hope the fans like our dynamic.”

Jesse teased fans that Wes and Tyler “have a really cool backstory” and “have been through some s*** together. Wes marches to the beat of his own drum and doesn’t always do things the right way. He doesn’t go by procedure and is more like, ‘Yeah, we’re gonna get it done and we will figure out if there’s a solution somewhere.’ Jay’s character Tyler is even worse than that. He’s like, ‘We’ll do the wrong thing to get it done…’ For Wes, Tyler is his bad angel and Smitty [Eva-Jane Willis] is the good angel because he’s somewhere in the middle.'”

Many wondered if Jesse’s character in Chicago P.D. was on his mind when filming FBI: International, since both characters were in law enforcement. “[Playing Wes], was both easy and hard at the same time. It’s tricky because they’re both cops, so their situations, their procedures and their lines of dialog and [using technical terms] like, putting out a BOLO or giving a description of somebody, all those cop thoughts are the same,” Jesse explained.

“The easy part is that Halsted had so much baggage at the end of P.D. and had been put through the wringer and was such a brooding, dark character. But Wes is like a breath of fresh air; he’s much lighter, carefree, and kind of unaffected. I have joked a couple of times that they do hold the gun the same way,” he said.
