Jim Parsons went to therapy after starring in Spoiler Alert.
Over the years, The Big Bang Theory has become a place of comfort for many of its viewers. The show ran for twelve years, and since the release of its very first episode, it has become timeless in every definition of the word. Jim Parsons’s portrayal of Sheldon Cooper was frustratingly good, and audiences could not help but fall in love with his quirks.
When an actor spends more than a decade playing a character, it fundamentally changes them as a person. Fans can assume that Sheldon had a similar effect on Parsons. However, it would seem that there was one thing that even he was unable to do. Something that was brought forth by a movie he did in 2022.
The Big Bang Theory Did Not Bring About A Change That Spoiler Alert Did
In 2022, Jim Parsons starred in the film adaptation of Michael Ausiello’s 2017 memoir, Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies. The book followed the journalist as he faced one of the most challenging points in his life when his husband was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer. Taking the viewers through their thirteen-year-long relationship, spectators were left in tears by the time the film ended.
Considering the emotional themes of the source material, one can only imagine what it must have been like for the actor to make the movie. During an interview with The Washington Post, Parsons revealed the true extent of the movie’s effects on him.
God, I hope this isn’t too personal. I ended up in therapy for the first time in my life after we finished this movie.
Fearing that he was sharing too much, The Big Bang Theory actor revealed that when he was done filming the movie, he ended up going to therapy. This was the first time he had taken such a step in his life, and while many may think the reason was because he was traumatized after filming, the truth could not be further from it.
Something Fundamentally Changed in Jim Parsons
Jim Parsons then explained why he needed therapy after he was done filming Spoiler Alert, and he made sure to emphasize that it wasn’t a negative reason. He was not traumatized after he was done filming the movie, however, he did have an epiphany.
Not because of the film, not because I was traumatized by it — quite the opposite.
The actor revealed during the interview that, after being a part of the film, he realized just how much healing he still had to do. Playing the role of Michael Ausiello ripped these aspects of him bare for Parsons to see. Knowing that he could be a better version of himself if he tried and live a happier life, the actor decided to go to therapy.
I felt it opened me up in a way that I thought, ‘I see the opportunity to live an even fuller, more authentic life, but I think I need guidance.’
Even though Parsons spent twelve years as Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory, this one revelation was exclusive to his 2022 film.
