Young Sheldon is coming to an end with the Season 7 finale. The show has provided endless humor and awkward moments between Sheldon Cooper and his family as he grows up in suburban Texas. Luckily for fans, the laughs won’t stop since a new spinoff featuring Georgie Cooper and Mandy McAllister is in development at CBS.
The Big Bang Theory spinoff is crowded with adoring characters who round out the cast, but some of them aren’t exactly comedic characters. For instance, Mandy completes the series as someone who supports and loves everyone, but is rarely a hilarious person to watch. The characters that do show their comedic side are often ones that aren’t purposefully trying to be funny, or throw quips to put a spotlight on them.
10Billy Sparks Radiates Unintentional Humor
CBS’s Young Sheldon Season 7 premiere hits new highs with unexpected character developments and emphasis on the women in the Cooper family.
Season | Episode | Episode Title | Funniest Moment |
---|---|---|---|
1 | 3 | “Poker, Faith, and Eggs” | Offering George chicken eggs to impress Missy. |
Billy is often the butt of the joke thanks to his inability to pick up on things pretty quickly. As the Coopers’ neighbor, he becomes friends with both Missy and Sheldon, who have sometimes exploited him due to his puppy-like nature.
Billy is always in a world of his own, quite like Sheldon, but perhaps Billy is just thinking about chickens rather than the unknown aspects of the universe. Being pretty clueless about the world around him, Billy is unmindful of the fact that his mother and George nearly had an affair. It’s his ignorance of life-altering events that makes him adorable and humorous.
9Dale Ballard Breaking Normalcy Never Gets Old
Season | Episode | Episode Title | Funniest Moment |
---|---|---|---|
3 | 6 | “A Parasol and a Hell of an Arm” | Encouraging Missy to beat up a boy on the baseball field. |
Dale would like to think of himself as one of the more serious characters on Young Sheldon, but he’s far from that. While he’s all about business and staying grounded in reality, there are moments where he breaks loose of this persona. When he does, it’s pretty entertaining to watch him unwind and relax.
Among Dale’s best moments are supporting the Coopers and his girlfriend Connie, sometimes in ways that aren’t considered typically moral. While he’d drive eight hours to bail his girlfriend out of jail, he’d also take the opportunity to take a picture of her in a jail cell. And who could forget about him encouraging Missy to hit a boy on the baseball field.
8Pastor Jeff Difford Uses Religious Tension to Lighten the Mood
Season | Episode | Episode Title | Funniest Moment |
---|---|---|---|
3 | 8 | “The Sin of Greed and a Chimichanga from Chi-Chi’s” | Asking God to forgive him for being a toaster oven. |
Pastor Jeff has been unofficially deemed as the villain of Young Sheldon. He’s responsible for kicking Mary out of church, hypocritically displaying un-Christian-like behavior, and trying to shut down Connie’s video rental business. His failed attempts at forcing his values on others makes him a joke in the series.
Pastor Jeff’s best moments derive from his verbal battles with Sheldon in church. The two go neck-in-neck almost every Sunday about the validity of the Bible, and the pastor’s exhausted looks every time Sheldon raises his hand induce big laughs.
7George Cooper Is Often the Face of Mockery
Season | Episode | Episode Title | Funniest Moment |
---|---|---|---|
4 | 2 | “A Docent, A Little Lady and a Bouncer Named Dalton” | Frantically getting Missy several types of menstrual products. |
George is written off as the lazy and uninterested beer-drinker who’s just trying to make ends meet on Young Sheldon. But he does have his moments where he’d win a “Father of the Year” award, which likely contributed to the writers’ retconning his extramarital affair. George is just too likable to hate, even when he does fail at his job.
George’s comedic relief sometimes relies on him being teased by Connie or even his own children. It doesn’t help that when Mary’s out of the house, he acts like a chicken with his head cut off. Sure, he wouldn’t succeed as a single parent, but he sure is funny trying to keep the house under control.
6Mary Cooper Brilliantly Delivers Comedy Through Body Language
Season | Episode | Episode Title | Funniest Moment |
---|---|---|---|
6 | 3 | “Passion’s Harvest and a Sheldocracy” | Imagining herself in a romance novel with Pastor Rob. |
As the Christ-worshipping matriarch of the Cooper family, Mary is portrayed as the “stuck-up” one. She’s always trying to assert her Christian values on her children, especially the atheistic Sheldon, and looks down on the innocent leisure of dancing. But it’s the way Zoe Perry conveys Mary’s stern personality that makes her a hilarious character to watch on screen.
Even when Mary hasn’t let loose after a couple of beers, Perry’s body language delivers Mary’s close-minded nature in a way that isn’t obnoxious. Whether it’s her wide-eyed expressions when she’s shocked by her children’s mischief or trying to hide herself as Sheldon battles Pastor Jeff in church, Mary is hardly ever an unfunny character.
5Sheldon Cooper’s Obnoxious Personality Has Its Funny Moments
The Big Bang Theory stars Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik will return as Sheldon and Amy in the series finale of Young Sheldon.
Season | Episode | Episode Title | Funniest Moment |
---|---|---|---|
2 | 6 | “A Loaf of Bread and a Grand Old Flag” | Accidentally suggesting he’s a communist on a news network. |
Sheldon is one of those characters that sours with age. Iain Armitage is effortlessly perfect as the younger version of Jim Parson’s character on The Big Bang Theory, but it’s hard to dismiss that self-centered children grace in maturity. Still, Sheldon’s social awkwardness makes for unintentional comedic moments.
In the first episode alone, Sheldon being unaware of social cues and the general nature of high school cruelty sets him apart from other characters. He suggests that he’ll start a fad in a Texan high school by wearing a bow tie, an attire that even his smothering mom disapproves of. Where Sheldon really shines is his interactions with more socially aware characters like Missy and Dr. Linkletter, who can’t help but scoff at Sheldon’s ego.
4John Sturgis’ Eccentric Nature Balances Sheldon’s Ego
Season | Episode | Episode Title | Funniest Moment |
---|---|---|---|
5 | 3 | “Potential Energy and Hooch on a Park Bench” | Pointing out how hard it is to get a pricing gun over a real gun in Texas. |
Dr. John Sturgis was introduced as a glimpse of Sheldon in the future, perhaps in a perfect world where Sheldon was never spoiled as a child. Dr. Sturgis is awkward and brilliant, yet kind and romantic. His relationship with Connie is one of the best subplots of the series, which unfortunately came to an end when they broke up.
The professor is by no means a character that’s funny on purpose, but that’s what makes him lovable. He doesn’t care what people think of his odd choice of transportation or the fact that he has a PhD and works at a grocery store. Dr. Sturgis marches to the beat of his own drum, and there’s nothing anyone can say that will change that.
3Georgie Cooper’s Witty Charm Makes Up for His Lack of Intelligence
Season | Episode | Episode Title | Funniest Moment |
---|---|---|---|
1 | 18 | “A Mother, a Child, and a Blue Man’s Backside” | Getting upset when his bed that he made for an hour is used to protect the family from a tornado. |
Compared to his brother Sheldon, Georgie is certainly not a scientific genius that’ll stand out in a crowd. Even Missy points out that Georgie isn’t anything special among the three children. But it’s his wits and shameless honesty that fuels his hysterical nature.
Where he lacks in book intelligence, Georgie makes up for in street-smart intelligence.Young Sheldon always takes the opportunity to exploit the fact Georgie’s brain is never working overtime. The jokes start cracking when Georgie has trouble just helping Missy with her elementary school homework or pretending to love God just to impress a girl. If Georgie continues this streak, his spinoff will sail smoothly as the next sitcom hit.
2Missy Cooper Takes Advantage of Being the Only Daughter
Season | Episode | Episode Title | Funniest Moment |
---|---|---|---|
1 | 5 | “A Solar Calculator, A Game Ball, and a Cheerleader’s Bosom” | Showing off her dancing skills at a high school party. |
As Sheldon’s twin sister, Missy has to be the comedic genius in order to stand out. She makes herself the center of attention by swearing during family dinner, or boldly asking about sex during Sunday School. She’s the life of the party, and no one’s shutting her music down.
Raegan Revord embodies Missy’s nuance in every shape and form, whether she’s a moody teenager lashing out or a young girl full of spunk. When things are awkward in the family, she’s not afraid to fill the empty silence with her sassy nature and quips.
1Connie Tucker Was a Comedian in Another Life
Images posted by Young Sheldon cast members have fans convinced that they’re filming George’s funeral scene.
Season | Episode | Episode Title | Funniest Moment |
---|---|---|---|
2 | 6 | “A Loaf of Bread and a Grand Old Flag” | Waving an American flag and singing patriotic anthems in her backyard after Sheldon is revealed as a communist. |
Without Connie, Young Sheldon would’ve never made it to seven seasons. She’s not the typical cookie-baking grandma who tucks her grandchildren in with a kiss on the forehead. She’ll certainly do that, but with a side of cheekiness and shade.
Connie works best when she’s performing with characters quite unlike herself, such as her staunch daughter Mary or her son-in-law George, who she often picks at and mocks. Even when the family is in its darkest moments, Connie always has a backhanded compliment or jab to lighten the mood.
